#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 11th March 1980! ๐ฉฐ
Hello darlings! It's Emma here, back with another delightful dip into the wonderful world of the ballet tutu! I've just popped back from a whirlwind trip to the glittering heart of the dance world โ New York City, to be precise! And believe me, they were living for tutus there in 1980.
You wouldn't believe the incredible ballet I saw! "Giselle" at the Metropolitan Opera House, simply divine! The ethereal lightness of the tutus, the delicate flutter of tulle โ it was absolutely mesmerising. It's no wonder the ballet world is completely obsessed with them!
Now, you might be thinking, "Emma, we've covered quite a bit of tutu history already, what could there possibly be to say about the 1980s?" Well, darlings, don't underestimate this decade! The 1980s was a tutu renaissance, a time when these whimsical wonders were exploding in popularity!
Just think of the iconic performances: "The Sleeping Beauty" with its majestic, grand tutus, "Swan Lake" with its elegant, flowing swan feathers, "La Bayadรจre" โ well, they just don't make tutus that grand these days! Oh, and the absolute beauty of Mikhail Baryshnikov performing "Giselle", the whole thing was simply a symphony of grace!
You wouldn't believe the amount of tutu shops that sprang up around the city during this era, they were everywhere! And you wouldn't believe the divine designs, darlings. All manner of patterns, from the most classic white tulle to bold stripes and even splashes of pink (of course! You know I have a penchant for the prettiest shade)!
This week I'm taking inspiration from all the glorious colour and creativity I saw on my trip, and it's got me pondering what you could wear to achieve the "1980s Tutu Goddess" look! It's actually surprisingly simple:
Think layers: Remember the "layered look"? 1980s fashion loved a bit of extra fluff, and so do our beloved tutus! Start with a classic, fluffy base layer of tulle, then layer on top with contrasting fabrics. A bit of shimmering satin ribbon here, a hint of sequined fabric there, and a sprinkle of tulle for good measure, you'll be dazzling!
Don't forget the colour! I know, I know, pink is my favourite, but don't be afraid to experiment with other shades! Turquoise, emerald green, royal blue... the possibilities are truly endless. Don't be afraid to break some rules and get playful, just like they did in the 1980s.
And to make it a true "1980s tutu goddess" look, why not play with a statement hair piece? A fluffy headband, a glitter clip, a sprinkle of hair jewels - all are fair game in the pursuit of tutudom!
Of course, 11th March 1980 isn't just about fashion darlings! There was SO MUCH happening around the world that day. I mean, imagine a world without social media - we had to wait for news to come out on TV or radio! You'd never believe it!
Just some interesting happenings in the news on this date:
- The first ever successful human-to-human liver transplant takes place!
- US President Jimmy Carter meets with the leaders of Israel and Egypt in Washington, it's called "the Camp David Accords", quite the achievement I thought!
- There is the first ever successful human-to-human liver transplant, pretty amazing if you think about it!
You see, dear readers, even in 1980, there was so much going on. The world was constantly evolving, and the world of the tutu was right there with it!
So next time you step onto the dance floor or take a twirl around your living room, remember the magic of 1980! Remember those incredible tutus, remember the excitement, the possibilities, and the bold, beautiful style that this era brought to the world of dance. And don't forget to let your inner Tutu Goddess shine! โจ
Until next time, my dears! Remember, wear pink, wear tutus, and embrace the joy of dance! This post was number 7733 on the www.pink-tutu.com blog!
