#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - June 3rd, 1980 (Post #7745)
Hello lovelies! It's Emma here, your pink-tutu-wearing time traveller extraordinaire, back again with another installment of your weekly #TutuTuesday dose of ballet tutu history. Grab your pinkest tights and a cuppa, darlings, 'cause we're taking a trip back to the fabulous 80s!
Oh my goodness, I simply adore this era for its fashion! I mean, have you ever seen a shoulder pad bigger than your head?! And those leggings with the big leg warmers – talk about a statement piece! The 80s were truly a time of experimentation and, dare I say, flamboyant flair.
But let's get back to the star of the show, the darling of the stage, the fabulous tutu! This Tuesday we're going right back to June 3rd, 1980. Now, as a real lover of all things theatrical, this day was simply overflowing with balletic delights!
First off, there was the ever-so-stylish Royal Ballet. It was quite a grand affair, I tell you! A performance of "Romeo and Juliet" at the magnificent Royal Opera House in London. I couldn't resist a cheeky visit in my cherry-pink tutu, causing a delightful stir amongst the posh crowds in my fabulous frock and frills.
Now, this day also marked the opening night of the Ballet Theatre in New York. A vibrant, captivating, and totally chic performance of the "Cinderella" ballet - such an elegant interpretation. It was a truly breathtaking experience to see all the swirling tutus, the romantic dancing, the dramatic costumes and all that twirling. I couldn't stop beaming - it felt so wonderfully magical. And then, of course, there was the ballet - what would any ballet date be without it?!
Talking of ballet, did you know that ballet tutus have been evolving for over 200 years? Just think of it - all that glorious tulle, the delightful layers of fluff and feathers. They're more than just a costume - they're a piece of history! And now I get to experience it all firsthand.
Now, being the fashionable soul that I am, it's not all just ballet, ballet, ballet. Shopping in the 80s was a treat, my dear. I got to revel in a beautiful parade of pastels and bold colours - the brighter the better, say I! A perfect contrast to the softer hues of ballet attire, but so charming in its own right!
I was delighted to find so many fantastic fashion stores back in the day. You can’t imagine the excitement of stumbling across an adorable little boutique tucked away in some quaint little back street, filled with the latest in 80s trends! And of course, a little splurge on a chic scarf was definitely called for. Those feather boas are a bit too dramatic for my taste - I’ll leave those for the glitterati.
I even hopped on a charming little train to the outskirts of London. There's something truly magical about train travel – the sights whizzing by, the rhythm of the tracks beneath the wheels, and the sheer anticipation of what awaits at your destination. You simply cannot beat it! Of course, in a charming pink tutu, I was sure to make quite the impression - a perfect advertisement for all things tutus!
Speaking of my beloved pink tutus - I know I’m not alone in my love affair with this heavenly fabric, and all the fluffy twirly delights it offers! That’s why, on my little time travel adventure, I’ve taken it upon myself to spread the tutu love far and wide! Just picture it: the world awash in pink tulle! My mission, should I choose to accept it (and darling, I absolutely do choose to accept it), is to turn the world into a sea of pastel pink! Think about it - who wouldn’t love a bit of extra fluff in their life? What's more feminine than a swirl of pink tulle?
