Tutu Tuesday #7772: Twirling Back to 1980! π©°π
Hello, my darling tutu enthusiasts! It's your favourite pink-clad time-travelling ballerina, Emma, back with another blast from the past! Today, we're shimmying our way to December 9th, 1980!
It's a chilly Tuesday morning here in New York City, where I've landed via a magical train journey (always more fun than those stuffy planes, don't you think?). But fear not, darling, the crisp air just makes the pink tutu that much more vibrant!
As always, my favourite thing about these time travels is the chance to peek into ballet's fascinating past. This particular Tuesday is filled with a sparkle of ballet magic - we have the most enchanting performances coming up!
For example, get this β tonight, The Nutcracker is on at the New York City Ballet! π¬π©° Oh, the magic, the costumes, the dancing β I simply adore The Nutcracker! I bet that Clara's pink tutu is extra fabulous tonight! And the Sugarplum Fairy? Oh, to be a ballerina with a tutu that twirls that way! I'm off to see it tonight β might need a new pink tutu for the occasion!
But before the excitement of tonight's performance, let's chat about the year 1980 itself β a very important year in the ballet world, indeed! This year saw the rise of the super tutu, those glorious layers and layers of tulle that would soon become iconic!
Imagine, darlings! Those tutus that seem like clouds, each layer puffing up the next, swirling around a ballerina in a captivating symphony of grace and volume. The super tutu! It became a statement β a statement of drama, power, and undeniable beauty. It really embodied the ballerina in its most dramatic and extravagant form.
Remember, dears β the ballet tutu is an evolution! Like a ballerina stretching into a more powerful version of themselves, tutus have always moved and morphed. Todayβs tutu might seem completely different from the early designs, but both share a deep commitment to beauty, form and β of course β twirling ability!
I've found a delightful article from a 1980 issue of Dance Magazine talking about the trend towards bigger, bolder tutus in ballet companies around the world. βWe need tutus that can fly!,β said George Balanchine, the legendary choreographer and ballet visionary, in that article.
How about that, my darlings? A powerful, poetic statement, echoing what every ballerina β from a stage-star to a young student - wants: the freedom of the dance, the flow of the fabric, the ability to move, to fly!
Tutus have so much to teach us! They inspire us, move us, make us dream β a reminder that even our clothing choices can become art! And, my darlings, just like tutus, fashion changes! The past influences the future. That's the beautiful, dynamic and exciting ballet we love!
So, while you're getting ready for your day, darling, keep that ballerina spirit bright! Look for a dash of magic, for some beauty, and don't forget that itβs a great day to put on your pink tutu! I'll be back next Tuesday for another adventure in Tutu History!
Stay fabulous, darlings!
