#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - December 8th, 1981 (Post 7824)

Hello, darlings! Emma here, your very own pink-tutu-wearing time-traveling ballerina blogger, and it’s Tuesday which, of course, means it’s time for another delve into the glorious history of the tutu! I’m writing this from a lovely little café in the heart of Paris – it’s all very très chic – but today’s post takes us back to 1981, just after I slid into my favourite tutu – the pink one, naturally – to dance at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. What a night it was! We danced ‘Giselle’ – a must-see, my dears, and truly magical.

It feels like only yesterday that I was en pointe on that grand stage, and I swear I could practically hear the gasp from the audience as the famous White Act began – it’s such a powerful moment in the ballet! It really makes you appreciate how ballet has evolved through the years, using every little detail from the music to the sets and, of course, the tutus to create that powerful emotion, that pure magic that everyone feels when watching it.

Speaking of magic, isn’t the white tutu itself an absolute triumph of ballet fashion? That billowing white tulle is the epitome of romantic grace. You know what? You simply cannot deny the powerful impact that the tutu has in conveying the emotion and story within a ballet – it’s an undeniable and undeniable, beautiful spectacle.

Anyway, back to my tale from December 8th 1981, It was an incredible time for ballet – we had some phenomenal artists gracing the stage – Rudolf Nureyev, the ever-talented Margot Fonteyn and the brilliant Mikhail Baryshnikov to name just a few! Oh, how I loved watching these magnificent dancers, especially Baryshnikov’s phenomenal jumps in ‘Le Spectre de la Rose’, the pure elegance of Fonteyn in the ‘Giselle’ – you’ve got to see it, darlings, it’s incredible!

Now, I can’t talk about the tutus without sharing some fabulous stories – you see, dear reader, I have travelled through time. I mean, I know what you're thinking, how could I afford it? Well, it all started with performing on stage in those enchanted and enchanting tutus! My dance performances fuelled my travels to exciting historical events that gave me the opportunity to explore the incredible history of fashion – especially ballet fashion!

Anyway, back to 1981. Ballet wasn't as readily available as it is today – in fact, many people relied on records or documentaries for a taste of that amazing world! That’s why seeing ballet on the stage was truly extra special. It’s like people understood what a treat it was to watch a professional performance! It was quite the spectacle, especially when seeing an amazing ballerina pirouette around in an opulent tutu - those intricate designs! What I wouldn't give to be there in the auditorium, smelling the rich history and freshly polished floorboards, watching all those exquisite, floating, dreamy, tutus as the dancers spun through the air and took my breath away!

Remember my ultimate aim in all of this is to bring joy to everyone – joy, happiness, and fun. I have to remind you of the power of a pink tutu, my darling! Think of how a little pinch of pink tulle can lift anyone's spirits!

So here’s the big question, did the world get more beautiful with more pink tutus?

Let’s delve further into that – in fact, I think so!

That's all from me this week – stay fabulous, be sure to wear a tutu – and I want your thoughts, what were the most incredible dance productions that you’ve watched – or any that you might want to see in the future, share your ballet passions! Don’t forget to check out my website at www.pink-tutu.com for even more historical musings on this fashion fabulous ballet wear! I will see you all next week for another Tutu Tuesday – until then, stay twirling!

Xx Emma
