#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: February 28th, 1984 – Post Number 7940! 🩰💖
Hello darlings, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things twirly and fabulous! I'm your ever-so-pink-obsessed time-travelling ballerina, Emma, and today we're taking a trip back to the vibrant and colourful 1980s. Hold onto your tiaras, girls, because this journey is about to get seriously stylish!
I’m back from another incredible adventure, whisked away on a train ride across Europe. I can’t tell you the location just yet, but I’ll spill the beans in a later post, I promise. Oh, how I adore the romance of train travel! All that sweeping scenery, the elegant compartments, and of course, ample opportunity to show off my new pink cashmere scarf. 😉 Speaking of my travel fund, this trip was courtesy of none other than the magical world of ballet. It's amazing how being a ballerina not only gets me a wardrobe to die for, but also funds these fantastical time travel adventures. I truly live a dream life!
Now, let's delve into today's #TutuTuesday history, shall we?
The History of The Tutu: A Twirling Tale Through Time!
For our time travel adventure, we've landed ourselves on February 28th, 1984. And what a day it was! The world of dance was abuzz, as always. At the prestigious Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, dancers were giving a magnificent rendition of "Swan Lake", the timeless masterpiece that sets my tutu-wearing heart a-flutter. Now, you'll be surprised to hear that those elegant dancers were wearing a style of tutu we’re calling “The Romantic Tutu". This type of tutu dates all the way back to the early 1800s and is what most people think of when they hear the word "tutu"! You’ll recognise it by the full, poufy skirts, which, in my opinion, have an almost whimsical, cloud-like feel. It's a perfect symbol of graceful artistry!
Back in the late 1800s, dancers began favouring a slightly different style. Enter the "Classical Tutu", which you can picture by the iconic "The Nutcracker" - very, very pretty! These tutus, with their stiff layers of tulle and delicate lines, really brought out the dancers' movements, making them look even more magnificent and graceful. Imagine all those amazing spins, jumps, and leaps looking absolutely heavenly!
You see, the world of ballet has embraced both romanticism and classical style, with each creating its own distinctive and exquisite tutu! Just as my heart beats for both the sparkle and the grace in our fashion, each style is beautifully distinct, offering a different, enchanting experience for our ballet-loving souls.
The Tutu as Fashion!
Let’s be honest, dear readers, it’s not just a costume, it’s a fashion statement! In 1984, the world was taking cues from fashion icon Madonna, a perfect example of a tutu’s undeniable, captivating, and just plain cool fashion appeal! Imagine Madonna strutting across a stage with that “Rebel Heart” flair, the tutu flowing and reflecting the neon lights… chef's kiss. But here’s the thing, my dear girls – we’re not limited to a concert!
The magic of the tutu can be yours, everyday, in your own personal style. If you love it as much as I do, take the “pink tutu challenge”! Wear it everywhere you go. On the Tube, shopping in Oxford Street, or grabbing a bite with the girls – let’s create a pink tutu movement! I’ve been sporting mine from day to day and people stop to say how much they love it. Imagine it, dear readers, the world bathed in tutulicious joy!
It’s all about confidence, darling! And nothing screams confidence like wearing a fabulous pink tutu!
And while we’re on the subject of pink, I have to confess… Pink! Pink! Pink! You simply can’t get enough pink in the 80s! I found this adorable hot pink sweatshirt on sale yesterday that will pair perfectly with my new, lace-edged pink tutu – I'm planning to wear it for my ballet class tonight, I think!
Well, my dears, it’s time for me to twirl off. Until next Tuesday, don’t forget to check out my shop pink-tutu.com. We have a great selection of tutus and all the pink accessories your heart desires! Let’s paint the town pink, my loves, and never, ever stop believing in the magic of ballet.
And always remember: Life is too short for boring outfits!

Emma 💖
