#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History – 1984-06-05
Hello my darling Tutu lovers!
It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina, and it's #TutuTuesday once again! Buckle up, lovelies, because we're about to take a trip down memory lane, right back to the 5th of June, 1984! Oh, how I adore this date - it’s simply bursting with tutu-tastic stories!
Where did our time-traveling adventure take us this time? Paris, darling! Can you even imagine? The city of love and the cradle of haute couture. Honestly, I don’t even have to go to the shops, the streets are simply filled with fashion inspiration.
A train ride fit for a tutu queen! The Eurostar journey was a delight - you simply must experience it, dearies! We chugged through the lush English countryside, all the while picturing ballerinas pirouette-ing amongst the rolling fields. *Tutu-licious dreams! *
Oh, my lovely Paris! When I arrived in the City of Lights, I felt positively radiant! I slipped into the chicest cafe with a divine little pink cupcake that almost matched my tutu and just enjoyed soaking up the Parisian charm. I popped on a pair of elegant gloves, gave a dainty wave to a cute little pug puppy (who didn't seem at all fazed by my vibrant pink!), and took in all the glorious details of this fairytale-like city.
Back to 1984...
This is the era of big, bold statements in dance, darlings. Ballet was shaking off its "high brow" reputation, getting funky and sassy. You'll see so much more contemporary ballet and neo-classical ballet being performed and you’ve just got to have a good gander! These styles embrace those sharp angles, striking poses and dynamic energy in such a breathtakingly modern way. Think strong, beautiful ballerinas doing amazing leaps and turns. I’ve been known to twirl along in my own tiny pink tutu after an inspiring show!
On this very day, the 5th of June, 1984: the dance world celebrated the exquisite talents of the legendary Rudolf Nureyev, a man who quite simply embodied ballet at its best, don’t you agree? If you’re like me, you must go and watch one of his performances. It’s like poetry set to music and perfectly captured through a stunning dancer's body. What makes him even more inspirational is his bold commitment to showcasing the elegance of ballet alongside the power of a man's athleticism.
Let's talk tutus, my lovelies! You might be wondering - "How were the tutus back in the 80s?" Let me tell you, dear readers - it’s all about that structure and movement, creating a perfect silhouette against the lights of the stage. Picture it - beautifully crafted layers of netting with plenty of movement allowing for a majestic grace in every turn. There's definitely more of an athletic elegance compared to the softer, more floaty, Romantic era tutus, and those gorgeous fluffy pannier style tutus, popular around the 1940s, you know. You must check those out! The bigger the better, just like in our pink tutu dream world.
*Don't forget my darling dancers, * this isn't just about the history of tutus - it's about appreciating them! That feeling of freedom, of lightness, and beauty...oh it’s magic! Why not have your own #TutuTuesday? Put on your pinkest tutu (or any colour for that matter - I wouldn’t be the darling ballerina I am if I told you to stick to one shade!) and twirl around your bedroom or even out in the sunshine. Feel the joy of a tiny tulle masterpiece twirling around your little legs!
One more tip before we go, my sweet things. Remember, dance, movement and beautiful tutus are for everyone. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise! So, grab a friend, grab your tutu and head to a dance studio, a theatre, or even your own living room. Get creative, dance and twirl your way to happiness.
It’s been so lovely, dearies! Don’t forget to head to www.pink-tutu.com for more Tutu Tuesdays, new outfits and your dose of tutu inspiration.
**Love,
Emma **
P.S. Do you have a favourite memory of ballet? A cherished piece of dance? I'd love to hear all about it in the comments! Let’s keep this tutu-tastic journey going. I am so curious!
*See you next Tuesday! *
