#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1984-06-12 (Post #7955)
Hiya darlings! Itâs Emma here, your resident tutu-enthusiast, back with another #TutuTuesday adventure into the fabulous history of our favourite fluffy fashion statements! Today, weâre whisking back to 1984, the year shoulder pads reached new heights and Madonna ruled the airwaves. But more importantly, the year that tutus took a delightful twist, or should I say twirl?!
Now, let me tell you, reaching the 80s in my trusty pink tutu felt like a homecoming! This era was a true wonderland of flamboyant fashion, a perfect breeding ground for tutus to really flourish. And trust me, my dears, flourish they did!
The big news? While classic ballet tutus were still the star attraction, a new type of tutu stepped onto the scene - the Romantic tutu. Ooh la la! These are my absolute favourites, with layers of airy tulle and a little less structure, making them perfect for twirls and graceful leaps. Think of a tutu whispering a sweet "Bonjour" instead of "Look at my big, bouncy legs" - theyâre pure, feminine, and a little bit mischievous.
Now, a true ballerina wouldn't dare leave her travel trunk without one of these Romantica treasures. I've just purchased one for my next Paris trip. squee Pink, naturally. * The shops in the City of Lights are bursting with fabulous French tulle creations and * I simply must stock up! I know the Parisiennes will adore it â who wouldn't love a pink-tutu clad ballerina strutting down the Champs-ĂlysĂ©es?
But let's not get sidetracked, shall we? This isnât about me, bien sĂ»r, this is about 1984's delightful contribution to the Tutu Story! This year saw ballet enter the American Top 40 with a hit song by none other than Olivia Newton-John, the reigning Queen of the 80s. âPhysicalâ is now an icon of the era and made it the most-played record on American radio of the year. (No mean feat!) And the music video? Olivia is stunning in a black, romantic tutu as she performs on a pink stage set - truly a masterpiece of dance and fashion combined. If you're ever feeling down, darling, a little Olivia and her ballet magic is a must-have.
Now, onto other exciting 80s tutu news⊠Did you know this very day, June 12, 1984, saw the premiere of the ballet "Romeo and Juliet", choreographed by John Cranko for the Royal Ballet? Just a tad excited about that news, darlings, it is the quintessential romance in a spectacular ballet setting, with exquisite costumes. It must have been pure bliss to watch, full of swirling tulle and passionate movements, a classic performance that still resonates today. If only my time travel plans would let me attend â oh, to be in the Royal Opera House right now!
But alas, I'm back in my little Derbyshire cottage for now. Luckily, the town's got an incredible selection of fabric stores. My mind is already churning with tutu ideas for my next performance⊠a *pastel pink number with shimmering silver tulle for that extra dose of sparkle. * Just think of the gorgeous movement of the fabric - so elegant!
Speaking of elegant, my journey through history always makes me ponder about what the tutus of the future hold. * I mean, think of it, darling - flying tutus? Tutus that light up? Tutus with built-in music players? The future of the tutu is a beautiful canvas, just waiting to be painted. * And I can't wait to see where our journey takes us!
Till next Tuesday, darlings! Stay fabulous!
Emma xx
