#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 7962: The 80s Tutu
Hello dears! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, www.pink-tutu.com. Today, as always, is #TutuTuesday, and I’m buzzing with excitement to dive into the glorious world of the tutu, my favourite sartorial delight!
You know me, always chasing the magic of history and that wonderful feeling of stepping back in time, this week I found myself in July 1984, all nestled in a carriage heading to Paris. Yes, I absolutely love a good train journey! Just me, my fabulous pink tutu and a delicious picnic. Now, this period was such an iconic era for the tutu. You see, while tutus have been gracing stages for centuries, the 1980s really took things to another level.
Just picture this… neon colours, big hair, and yes, you guessed it, the most incredible tutus, my dears. It was the golden age of the flamboyant tutu, where they became almost like statement pieces – bold, bright and perfectly suited for the iconic ‘80s. I simply adore those bold patterns and striking shades, they are positively thrilling! And don't even get me started on the sparkle. We were all about that glitz and glamour back then.
While the classic tulle tutu continued to reign supreme, a whole new trend emerged - the ‘Power Tutu’, a perfect example of the power and confidence the decade emanated. Think of strong, architectural forms. The classic, flowing, ballerina tutu? Not so much! These beauties were about angles and lines, a striking display of strength, showcasing a bold, contemporary silhouette.
There were the big tutus, the dramatic, flowing masterpieces and the elegant, delicate ones that seemed to just skim the stage, a symphony of movement in every step.
The fashion during that period, like the tutu itself, was dynamic, full of energy, colour and bold choices. We had a mix of the sleek, sophisticated styles from previous decades along with new, funky and quirky styles like leggings and the ever popular shoulder pads, those gorgeous puffy creations.
If you’re wondering where to find those captivating tutu styles, think fashion houses like Balmain and the one and only Christian Dior, renowned for their daring interpretations of the traditional tutu. Imagine, their fashion houses buzzing with the creativity and energy of a thousand dancers! These beauties took center stage on those iconic catwalks. I was absolutely mesmerised!
Oh! I must tell you about the famous dance performance on that magical July 31st – the one that just blew me away! We had the amazing Mikhail Baryshnikov - his athleticism was a feast for the eyes, so graceful yet full of power! A dance that showcased not only his impressive ballet skills but also highlighted the sheer brilliance of that particular era! The costumes… oh my! That mix of traditional, classic and daring, edgy design – truly beautiful!
Just like you all, I live for a good ballet show! I’ve been dancing ever since I could walk, so ballet holds a special place in my heart. The graceful, story-telling through movement – it’s truly an art form! Ballet shows in the '80s – were a huge event. All the socialites, dancers and of course the ever-fashionable people from the world of ballet gathered in that special place where dance becomes art.
Speaking of the world of ballet, I adore that mix of sophistication, strength and elegance. A place where tradition meets contemporary. That's why I just love the whole theatre experience. It's an occasion to dress up, enjoy a fabulous ballet and indulge in those amazing pre-show drinks at the interval. So stylish, so elegant - just what my inner fashionista yearns for!
Let's be real, dear reader, every ballerina (or those who wish to wear the magical tutu, just like me!) wants to experience that joy, that magic of performing on a stage, captivating your audience with each twirl! It's the power of the tutu, isn't it?
Now, don't think for a moment that the 1980s was just about grand theatrical displays of dance and fashion. There was a wonderful boom of street dance, contemporary styles, hip hop, and even the birth of the beautiful ‘Street Ballet’, merging street culture with the elegance and movement of classic ballet. A time where it was all about pushing those boundaries and challenging the norm.
Here's what truly captures me about 1980s fashion and ballet – it’s all about freedom of expression, self-belief and daring to be different. This was the era of Madonna, Boy George - individuality and self-expression were the real kings and queens! And so it was for ballet, too. Remember those legendary tutus, so creative and bold? Those weren't afraid to experiment and push the limits! And the fashion, it was a vibrant reflection of the world around them. It just reminds me how powerful it can be to express yourself, and the tutu was a wonderful way to do just that!
So as we head to the close of another week in this incredible world of the ballet tutu, let's not forget the importance of self-expression, creativity and having a little fun along the way! If you happen to be in Derbyshire, England, do say hello, we should go shopping!
My dear friends, I can't wait for another #TutuTuesday. Do tell me about your favourite ballet tutus and the incredible shows that made you dream. Until then, let your tutus flutter and your creativity blossom. Remember, we can all wear a tutu, and be our fabulous selves!
Yours in tulle,
Emma xx
