Tutu Tuesday: A Trip Back to June 1987 - #8112
Hello darlings! It's me, Emma, your friendly neighbourhood tutu enthusiast, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com!
This week, for our Tutu Tuesday trip, we're whizzing back to June 16th, 1987! I've always wanted to see the world through the eyes of a ballerina from this era, so grab a cuppa, settle in with a bit of cake, and let's travel back in time together.
Now, imagine the scene. The streets of London, buzzing with the thrill of the day. I've got my blush pink tutu on, naturally! Itโs a gloriously frothy confection of layers and ruffles. I paired it with a fluffy lavender cardigan, a dash of shimmering glitter and a pair of pearly pink ballet shoes.
Let's get back to June 16th! It was a Monday, just like today! What an exciting week to be a ballet fanatic - for that day, the Royal Opera House was hosting 'The Sleeping Beauty', with the Royal Ballet. Can you imagine?! It must have been a spectacular performance. Just imagining the music, the choreography, the dazzling costumes... It would have been magical.
And for a little treat, my friends and I are heading off to Selfridges after the performance to do some window-shopping and pick out some gorgeous, new fabrics for our summer tutus. It's all about bright colors, bold patterns, and frilly details! Oh, darling, the 80s were a real treat for a girl who loves tutus as much as I do.
I bet we also caught a glimpse of the Fashion Museum's latest exhibit "A Century of Dance Fashion". Can you believe a hundred years of dance fashion? The thought of the costumes - the changing styles, the textures, the fabrics! Such an inspiration for a girl with a passion for pink and all things fluffy.
Of course, no trip to 1987 would be complete without taking the tube, and popping into a cosy tea room with my girls for a spot of gossip and delicious cakes. The Hampstead Tea Rooms have the best scones, a must-try for every travelling ballerina!
You know what they say, darling, the only thing better than a tutu is a new tutu! Oh, and I forgot to mention - I've been doing a little research, and it turns out that ballet tutus are thought to have originated from the nineteenth century. Now there's a fascinating thought, isn't it? To think about those beautiful costumes that started the tutu trend.
It's a lovely, lighthearted time! This is the age where we saw the blossoming of new techniques like "pointe". Can you believe that some ballerinas danced on the tips of their toes and flew through the air on stage? Absolutely breathtaking, darling!
But remember, darlings, just like with everything in fashion, there are also the iconic styles. The traditional tutu styles with a simple layer of netting remain popular for many performances.
My Tutu Tuesday journeys are all about the love of the dance, and discovering how different times and eras express this art form. There's such a beauty in looking back and appreciating where our beloved tutu trend came from.
Now, don't forget to share your Tutu Tuesday photos with me on Instagram using #TutuTuesday! I can't wait to see what you all get up to this week. Until next week, darlings, stay bright, be bold, and let's spread the pink tutu love!
