#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: June 30th, 1987 - A Dance Through Time!
Hello lovelies!
Welcome back to another fabulous Tuesday, and another #TutuTuesday trip through time! 🩰 I’m your tutu-clad guide to the history of this iconic dancewear, and today, I’m waltzing back to 1987. June 30th, to be precise, where the tutu takes us on a whirlwind of fashion and dance, from a Royal Ballet Premiere to a groundbreaking musical! Buckle up buttercups, it’s time for a journey!
As always, if you fancy catching up on previous adventures, this is post number 8114 on www.pink-tutu.com. You can always find the past #TutuTuesday adventures in the archive – and, you guessed it, they're all decked out in my favourite colour!
The Ballet: The Premiere
Firstly, on this glorious 30th June 1987, The Royal Ballet were getting all the royal treatment. Not with a tiara and gloves – this was a Royal Premiere for the ‘Taming of the Shrew’, and I just have to say, a Shakespeare play getting its very own ballet, well, what's not to love about that? My heart goes out to the ballerinas, so gracefully executing every flick of the wrist and arabesque as they tell the story of Kate and Petruchio - no tutu was spared, for a dazzling ballet performance. Now if that isn’t what dreams are made of I don't know what is!
The Broadway Buzz:
Just a little bit of a hop, skip, and a jump over the Atlantic and the excitement is bubbling over in New York City! Oh, it's not the ballet, but a show that would go on to change the face of musicals - the one, the only Les Miserables. June 30th, 1987 saw the Broadway Premiere. It was one of the most significant events for musical theatre history. This isn't strictly a tutu moment, as this production was heavy on the historical costumes, but still, it made waves in the entertainment world. If it were a ballerina, it'd be doing a breathtaking tour-de-force grand jeté. I must admit I always fancy a good musical number! And yes, I just had to put my little twirling shoe on the train tracks to see Les Mis. If there were enough pink tutus, the whole show might have been even more fantastic.
Fashion, Fashion Everywhere!
Let's take a moment for some fashion flair! We're diving into the glamorous world of 1987. We all know, nothing stays the same and 1987 was definitely an era of its own. Just imagine – leggings worn with tulle, bright colours splashed on the runways and yes, some serious hair! Now I've had a good old mooch through my archive, (not as many vintage shops back in those days!), but what did catch my eye was the reemergence of the tutu itself. The power of fashion to bring something back from the past. And to think – the whole 80s craze could be brought back today! But please, no neon pink! My love is all pastel shades. It is just so chic!
My Personal Tutus – A Whimsical Walk through the Past!
Now, imagine me for a moment, a true ballerina at heart! So I had to grab my own tutu for a waltz through a real-life, time-traveling memory lane.
First, we stop for some shopping in a beautiful antique shop in Derbyshire, my lovely home county! Imagine this… I had the chance to slip into a beautiful vintage 1980s tutu, the soft tulle cascading down, almost making me dizzy with joy! And let’s be honest - pink would've been my top pick in those days. There's just something special about the style and a vintage pink, with the pastel hues is a beauty that never fades!
Ballet is for Everyone!
This journey has really reminded me of what the ballet truly embodies - creativity, passion and just plain joy. And, you know what, if you have a little sparkle in your eye and a playful heart, we’re all a little bit ballerina. So grab that bright and beautiful tutu and take a bow in front of the mirror, or get out there and enjoy a magical ballet performance. And remember, if we all take to wearing pink tutus, the world will be a much more wonderful and joyous place, one graceful twirl at a time!
Don’t forget to pop over to www.pink-tutu.com and subscribe! Let's dance through history every Tuesday, and share the beauty of this magical art form. I'm off to catch another ballet performance. See you next #TutuTuesday! 💋
