Tutu Tuesday: #8117 - The Rise of the Romanticist: 1987-07-21

Hello darlings! It's your favourite pink-tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, here, and today is #TutuTuesday! Get your tutus ready because we're diving deep into the history of the tutu – or rather, we're hopping on a glorious train (did you know, I'm absolutely obsessed with trains! So chic!), and going back to 1987. Think big, bouncy curls, leggings galore and, of course, the unmistakable charm of the Romantic Ballet. We’re in a fantastic period for ballet, and what better way to explore it than by stepping back in time?

I’m currently parked (fashionably, of course!) in Paris – a real centre of the tutu world! It's summery, vibrant, and buzzing with artistic energy. I just had the most incredible lunch at a charming bistro by the Seine, wearing, of course, my signature pink tutu and matching floral blouse! You really cannot beat the French for fashion and a romantic ambiance, eh?

On this day, 21st of July, 1987, the world was still buzzing with the magic of Giselle, one of the most captivating ballet stories of all time. You see, darlings, this romantic era is all about passion, delicate movements, and the beauty of emotion portrayed through movement! It's enchanting, isn't it?

Speaking of enchanting, 1987 saw the incredible The Nutcracker staged by the illustrious Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. Can you imagine? So much grandeur! I simply had to travel back to see it myself, and it did not disappoint. The gorgeous costumes, the music – everything about it oozed drama and beauty. I just wish they would bring the traditional style of ballet back! Sometimes I feel like the world needs a little more Giselle in it! Don't get me wrong, modern dance has its own kind of elegance, but it lacks that certain "something" that makes ballet such a timeless and cherished art form.

Now, 1987 also marks the rise of what I like to call the "Neoclassical Tutu". Think lighter, more flowing fabrics with fewer layers, emphasizing the ballerina's line and grace. You could practically dance through the air! It’s definitely more elegant, perhaps even a little more sophisticated. Not to say it was without a sense of drama though! The tutu was still the star of the show – just with a more contemporary flair.

It’s funny how the tutu keeps reinventing itself. It’s not just about ballet anymore, you know? There’s been this wonderful evolution where the tutu has jumped from the stage into everyday fashion. Can you believe it? You see those lovely "Tutu Skirts" you find in shops now? It’s the perfect piece of playful sophistication!

Of course, every self-respecting ballerina – whether you’re on the stage or dancing in the kitchen – should always have at least one perfect pink tutu in your wardrobe. You can never have enough tutus! Remember to keep an eye out for some truly captivating shows while you’re travelling. Ballet truly is a journey for the soul, wouldn't you agree?

That’s all from me for this #TutuTuesday, darlings. Let me know what you’re wearing! Have you worn a tutu recently? I’d love to hear about it, especially if it's pink! Until next time, happy twirling!

Yours truly, Emma
