Tutu Tuesday: #8120 - 1987-08-11: A Blast From the Past, Darling!

Helloooo, my precious pink-tutu-loving darlings! It's your favourite time-traveling ballerina, Emma, back with another fabulously feathered #TutuTuesday post! Today, we're swirling back to 1987, a time when shoulder pads were practically furniture, and the only thing more iconic than a legwarmer was a neon-pink leotard (think Madonna, girls!).

Now, as I whizzed through the time vortex (in my sparkly, pink-sequined trackie, of course!), I felt the sheer joy of being surrounded by a world of colour and energy, something that makes me absolutely positively beam with excitement! And, speaking of being surrounded by things, can we talk about the massive hairspray clouds we're navigating through? It's enough to make a girl's hair stand on end!

Anyway, darling, let's take a peek at what we have in store for today's #TutuTuesday! It's August 11th, 1987, which means one thing - The Royal Ballet is performing at the Royal Opera House in London! Oh, I simply adore London. The street performers, the theatres, the quaint tea shops! It's practically begging to be photographed in your fanciest outfit and documented on social media (not that we have any of that here yet, darling, although there are some pretty fab photographers with big, old cameras in the back alleys snapping shots of the latest styles!)

The programme? "La Bayadère", one of my favourite ballets, featuring Natalia Makarova. Her footwork is breathtaking, and the whole production is a complete triumph. This ballet was my inspiration for my gorgeous powder pink tutu (it has tiny pearl bead embellishments that you can just about make out in my blog profile photo!)! Speaking of the production itself, it's bursting with dazzling, elaborate costumes that look straight out of a fantastical dream. Think layered silks, bejeweled headpieces, and a multitude of fantastic colours. Honestly, the costume department at the Royal Opera House is nothing short of phenomenal. The craftsmanship, the colour schemes - I am absolutely besotted!

But enough about costumes, let's talk about the dancers themselves. 1987 was an incredible era for ballet. The energy, the skill, the artistry, it was just captivating. And of course, those classic tutus. You simply can't go wrong with a classic tulle ballerina tutu, darling! The romantic air they bring to the stage, the gentle flutter of the skirt as a ballerina moves, and the way it highlights those beautiful pointe shoes. There's simply no other garment on earth that has this je ne sais quoi.

Now, you can’t imagine how excited I am to spend this evening soaking up the magical world of the theatre! Imagine the lights, the music, the sheer exhilaration of it all. And who knows, perhaps there’ll even be an after-party with delicious pastries and fizzy pink lemonade?

Of course, darling, my heart would never let me miss an opportunity to explore the world of vintage fashion here in 1987! Imagine all those vibrant colours and bold styles. I absolutely adore a good shopping spree, especially in the boutiques here, filled with everything retro, from amazing leather jackets (pink, naturally!) to those fabulously daring sunglasses with chunky plastic frames. Oh my, this is all making me terribly giddy!

I've already found a little corner boutique where I spotted a beautiful powder pink sequined bolero that simply screamed my name! I absolutely must go back and nab that piece. And I think my heart will be forever in love with this beautiful lacey floral pink mini skirt I found, perfect for a night of waltzing. It would be fabulous paired with a powder pink ribbon tied in my hair, don’t you think?

Remember, darling, don’t be shy about experimenting! Everyone looks gorgeous in pink! And a tutu isn't just for ballet, you know! I’ve worn mine on shopping sprees, to the theatre, and even on a very romantic walk by the Thames (not that I'm sharing all of my adventures, just my tutu-related ones!).

That's all for this week's Tutu Tuesday, my loves. Keep your eyes peeled for a gorgeous post next week all about the legendary pink tutu worn by the infamous ballerina, Margot Fonteyn! It’ll blow you away, darling. Until then, stay sparkly and never stop dreaming in pink!

Lots of love and twirls,

Emma xx
