#TutuTuesday: A Time Travelling Tale from 1987!

Hey my lovely lot! Welcome back to another week of #TutuTuesday on pink-tutu.com! It’s me, your friendly neighbourhood pink-tutu wearing time traveller, Emma, ready to whisk you away on a journey through the fascinating history of the tutu! Today, we’re heading back to a glorious summer day in 1987!

Oh, 1987 was just fabulous! You know, the music was electric, the shoulder pads were massive, and we could still wear a neon pink outfit without fearing ridicule! It’s that special time of the 80s when every single one of us wanted to rock a leotard, leg warmers, a ponytail, and of course… a fabulous tutu!

Hold onto your bonnets ladies, because this post is gonna be extra special. It's post number 8121, you guys! How exciting is that? Now, enough chit-chat, let's get down to the tutu-business!

But First, A Pink Fizz And A Fashion Update!

Speaking of rocking a leotard and tutu, I just had the most incredible afternoon at the latest Ballet Boutique in Derbyshire! They had these dazzling pink tulle tutus, and oh, my! Imagine them paired with a black velvet leotard and a fluffy pink cardigan. Now that’s what I call an elegant yet whimsical ballet street outfit! It’s just begging to be worn to the new London Theatre performance next week! And speaking of theatres… cue the dramatic music… there's something rather thrilling happening at the Royal Opera House on 18th August! Did you know they're presenting a masterpiece of dance - “Swan Lake!” My goodness, Tchaikovsky, those soaring melodies are just pure enchantment.

Speaking of enchanting... let's jump right into this glorious 1987!

A Look Back at the 1987 Tutu Landscape:

This year is all about colour and movement! I’m talking about bold, eye-catching tutus, perfect for the contemporary ballet scene that was just bursting with innovation back then. Think swirling layers of tulle, think gorgeous pastel shades like a dream made pink and purple, and think classic tutus redesigned in new and daring ways! Oh, I could spend days just gushing over the creativity and confidence that 1987 brought to the tutu world. And I just love the sense of carefree expression that came with it! We’re talking a celebration of all things feminine and fabulous!

Remember the legendary “Baryshnikov by Tharp” dance extravaganza? Sigh. Just seeing it in its time travelling glory made me want to whip up my own signature pink and white ruffled tutu! I can't even tell you how much the dancing and the costuming inspired me back then!

And, oh, can I just mention the rise of the street style tutu back in 1987! Ooh la la! Don't you just love it when something so iconic from the world of ballet jumps into everyday wear! This trend really made me feel like anything was possible. We were bold and creative, pushing the boundaries of fashion and dancing with abandon!

But How Did We Get Here?

If you want to trace the history of the tutu, you'll have to dig way, way back in time to 1500s Renaissance Italy! You see, our cherished tutu had very humble beginnings. Originally, it was all about long skirts worn for dance, with little regard for the kind of lightweight twirling potential that makes tutus so delightful today! But as the ballet form grew and changed, so did the silhouette of the tutu!

In the 19th century, romanticism and dance fused perfectly, and the "romantic tutu" was born! This was the moment we started to see those stunning bell-shaped silhouettes and layers of light tulle. And oh my goodness, those amazing ballet performances made me want to dance myself!

This was the foundation for what we now consider "The Classical Tutu," which you know so well, with the frilly tiers and the magical lightness of tulle. Imagine the joy of seeing these gorgeous dancers swirl around the stage, their skirts just a cloud of graceful elegance!

By the 20th century, the tutu became the epitome of ballet fashion! And we are SO glad for the way ballet designers like Mr. de la Fontaine experimented and developed a vast array of styles and colors! Oh, you’ll just have to pop on over to your nearest library (or internet! They have everything now) to see all these stunning tutu pictures, and just fall in love with the art of ballet and fashion all over again!

1987 Was Our Year: A Celebration of Feminine Power & Fun!

But as we head back to our beloved year of 1987, you can feel the excitement! The dance world is exploding with creative energy, and the tutu has truly become a part of pop culture. It’s all about making a statement, expressing your unique self, and most importantly, having fun! Oh, to go back in time and relive those joyous days!

This period marks an explosion of new choreographers and dancers, each adding their own signature twist to the way tutus were worn and choreographed. The possibilities for artistic expression were limitless, and you could feel it on the stages all over the world.

As a dancer myself, it's just such a joy to think about how many creative dreams have been given life in the glorious, pink-filled tutu!

Pink, Pink, And More Pink!

Speaking of dreams... if you are a passionate tutu aficionado, you can embrace your inner ballerina every single day, darling! Whether you're dancing at home, enjoying a theatre performance, or even simply browsing the internet, make sure you spread the joy of the pink tutu!

I have to run for now, my dear readers, because I'm off to enjoy an amazing, glittery, pink ballet recital in Derbyshire!

As always, thank you for joining me on this wonderful #TutuTuesday journey. Until next week, keep those pink tutus spinning, and keep on dreaming big, my darlings!

P.S. You know what's truly magical? It’s when we connect. So let me know what you think of 1987 and share your love for all things pink and twirling in the comments below!
