#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1987-11-10!

Hello darlings! It's your favourite tutu-clad time traveller Emma, here with another fabulously frivolous #TutuTuesday post for your Tuesday treat!

Today we're taking a trip back to 1987 - that glorious year when leg warmers were all the rage, and Madonna ruled the airwaves with her iconic 'Like A Prayer' album (which is SO amazing, by the way!). This time travel, funded by my ever-so-slightly outrageous performance in a Paris ballet recital, takes me to none other than the glittering city of New York, the hub of all things fabulous!

So, what is happening in 1987-11-10? Well, a big fashion show is taking place in NYC – you know me, I’m already there, snapping pics for my personal style archives. It's a grand event for Geoffrey Beene featuring, you guessed it – the mighty tutu! This show is showcasing some seriously sensational ballet-inspired pieces! I can practically smell the sequins, feel the flutter of tulle, and imagine the grace of the models on the runway!

Of course, I always research fashion trends thoroughly before embarking on a time travel adventure, and I’m already bursting with exciting ideas on how to rock this trend myself. I’m dreaming of pink sequins, fluffy tulle, and maybe even a little feather boa for a touch of retro-chic.

Tutus Take New York!

It’s no secret, ladies, that New York has a deep love for dance and its incredible stage productions. The iconic New York City Ballet, with its home at Lincoln Center, is attracting crowds of ballet lovers like myself to see exquisite shows featuring ballerinas spinning and leaping in classic tutus. We're talking dreamy white, swirling tulle masterpieces here!

But beyond the stage, the tutu's influence is truly permeating fashion, like a delightful wisp of tulle on a balmy spring breeze. Designers like Thierry Mugler and Christian Lacroix are showcasing innovative and glamorous reinterpretations of the ballet classic. I have a hunch this tutu trend is set to revolutionise fashion!

I even heard Madonna herself recently wore a tutu at a press conference! Imagine my excitement – one of the world’s most iconic pop stars adopting this iconic symbol of ballet. It’s practically a sign!

So ladies, it's not just for the stage. This is about expressing yourself. This is about the power of dance! This is about channeling your inner ballerina, in whatever sparkly, floaty ways you choose!

From Past to Present!

Let's rewind even further. Did you know that back in the day, in the late 18th century, ballerinas actually wore tight-fitting pantaloons underneath their tutu-like garments! I just love that contrast – they might not have been exactly the modern tutu we know and love, but there was a beautiful ballet-inspired silhouette, much like a blossoming rosebud.

Fast forward to the 18th and 19th centuries, and things start getting really exciting! Marie Taglioni, one of the legendary ballerinas of that era, famously graced the stage in a groundbreaking airy, romantic tutu, much like the ones I adore today! It allowed ballerinas greater movement and showcased their grace. It was the beginning of the modern tutu, you could say!

As tutus evolved over the next few decades, I’m just enthralled by how they remained connected to the beauty and drama of ballet while constantly adapting to evolving trends and reflecting societal ideals. This dynamic beauty is precisely why I love studying tutu history – there’s so much fascinating evolution to be uncovered! It's truly a journey through the world of ballet fashion!

Sharing my tutu love!

As always, I’m off to explore a new ballet show in New York – there’s no better way to see the latest in tutu evolution than at a live performance! If you’re ever in New York, I’d highly recommend visiting a ballet performance. Or even, take a ballet class – who knows, maybe you'll even feel inspired to buy your own tutu!

For those who’ve joined me in my time travel, thank you for joining me on this fabulously fun journey. Let’s keep this #TutuTuesday trend going strong, and don't be afraid to embrace your inner ballerina. After all, a tutu isn’t just a piece of clothing, it’s an attitude.

Until next week, darling! Don’t forget to visit my blog again next Tuesday for another adventure in tutu history.

Until then, keep those twirls going and remember – anything goes in a tutu!

Love and tutus,

Emma xx
