#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1987-12-22 (Post #8139)

Hello my darlings! It's Emma here, your favourite tutu-wearing time traveller, back from a whirlwind trip through the annals of dance history. I'm here today with a fabulous trip down memory lane, all about the ballet tutu, because frankly, it's the best accessory in the whole world (pink tutus are definitely a close second though!)

Today, my TutuTuesday takes us to December 22nd, 1987, and my oh my, what a time to be alive! You can just imagine it, can't you? The eighties, shoulder pads as high as skyscrapers, music pumping in the disco, and a real sense of "more is more" in fashion and dancing alike!

1987 – The Dawn of Tutu Twirls!

The late eighties were a beautiful time for tutus, let me tell you. Ballet companies everywhere were going absolutely bonkers for extravagant tutus, with frills, tiers, and layers upon layers of tulle! And the colours, oh the colours! From sparkling royal blues and vibrant greens to daring neon pink, these tutus were the statement piece of any dance performance.

Think of a delicate snowflake cascading around a ballerina, all shimmering and graceful. Imagine a whirlwind of rainbow tulle, pirouetting with joyous abandon. These are the memories that 1987 etched into my time-traveling heart!

Remembering The Big Day

Now, let's fast forward to December 22nd, 1987. This wasn't just any ordinary date - it was a day of dazzling ballet! In the Royal Opera House (the crème de la crème of London's theatres!), the legendary Margot Fonteyn was celebrating her 65th birthday! A star from the Golden Age of Ballet, her legacy still shone brightly, lighting up the hearts of all who witnessed her grace.

I'm just picturing it, can't you? The exquisite costumes, the incredible performance, and the radiant joy of a career celebrated in all its glorious splendour. There would have been a special tutu involved, of course – a true tribute to the artistry and skill of one of the greatest ballerinas of all time!

The Power of Pink: Embracing the "More is More" Ethos!

I'm absolutely living for the tutus of 1987 – it's such a wonderful example of how a simple silhouette can be transformed with bold colours, exciting details, and so much tulle. Think big! Embrace the "more is more" ethos, just like the fearless dancers of the eighties. Go wild with colour, explore layers of tulle, and add all the sparkle you can muster! Because let's be honest, when it comes to tutus, there's really no such thing as too much!

Now, this wouldn't be a TutuTuesday post without a fashion moment! I recently came across the most amazing pink tulle skirt whilst on a trip through London's iconic Carnaby Street. Now, you know I love a good tulle skirt, but this one… swoon!

You can find it on page 16 of my favourite pink tutu online magazine! It's perfect for your next ballet performance (or afternoon tea with the girls!)

So there you have it, my darlings – a glorious trip through ballet history with a touch of pink, a sprinkle of glamour, and a whole lotta tutu magic. I can't wait to see what future #TutuTuesday adventures await me!

Until next time, keep twirling, keep sparkling, and never stop dreaming of a world where pink tutus are the everyday uniform!

Love, Emma
