#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Whirlwind of 1987!

Hello my darling tutu-lovers! It’s Emma here, back from another exciting trip through time with my trusty pink tutu by my side! This week, I've waltzed my way back to 1987, and let me tell you, it was a veritable explosion of colour and fabulousness! This is post number 8140 on my blog, and if you're new here, welcome! We explore the delightful history of tutus here, one twirl at a time. Now, grab your favourite cuppa and settle in for a journey through time… with a dash of glitter!

I must admit, when I popped into 1987, I was a bit taken aback by the sheer volume of fabulous, larger-than-life tutus! Ballet, my dears, was thriving – on stage and on the streets. From the legendary performances of the Royal Ballet in London to the innovative works of choreographers across the globe, tutus were having a grand time!

One of the highlights of my 1987 trip was witnessing the premiere of The Nutcracker, a dazzling Christmas tradition! It was pure magic! I mean, who wouldn’t love the delicate pink and blue tutus of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her captivating choreography? It made my little ballerina heart skip a beat.

I was also absolutely mesmerised by the New York City Ballet's production of Apollo, which was a contemporary twist on the Greek myth. The graceful lines of the dancers in their crisp, white tutus were breathtaking. A moment of artistic excellence that captured the very essence of classical ballet.

And if I’m being honest, 1987 saw the tutu transcend the realm of the stage and find its way onto the fashion scene. It’s amazing to think how this iconic piece of dancewear went from being something exclusive to dancers to being embraced by everyone, from rock stars to models. You know, it even inspired my little tutu-clad fashionista soul to wear this adorable, billowing pink number today, complete with a dazzling silver sequined belt for a touch of 1980s glam!

I even stumbled upon a fascinating vintage shop in Soho, London, where they were selling old tutus - imagine! I almost bought a darling black tutu with a sequined bodice - just picture it - it would have looked exquisite with my favourite pair of boots. Oh, the things you discover in the past! It’s no wonder that I've developed a penchant for buying antique tutus when I go on my trips through time!

But don't think this trend for tutus was confined to just one corner of the world, dear friends. Across the globe, tutus were becoming a statement of style and individuality. In Paris, you could see tutus worn in street fashion, a celebration of self-expression. A delightful, and surprisingly unexpected sight that reminds us how tutus can effortlessly combine sophistication and whimsy. I did consider whipping up my own street-inspired look – a sequined tutu, black tights and a leather jacket. What a showstopper that would have been, but alas, alas, time travel can only handle so much… sigh.

The fact is, in 1987, the tutu was anything but just an item of dancewear, it was an embodiment of joy, freedom, and artistic expression, and its journey continues to this day.

Oh, and let me tell you, in 1987 the train travel in London was superb! From the sleek underground trains to the spacious, elegant carriages of the railways, it was all rather magical. I simply had to enjoy the sights, a little peek into 1987’s London! The shops along Oxford Street were teeming with bright colours, playful patterns, and unique textures – the perfect spot for me to do some 1987s fashion hunting. And as I drifted off on the train back to Derbyshire, England, my mind was already swimming with ideas for my next post!

But wait, there’s more! It is officially December 29th in my little corner of the world, 1987, which means it is time for us all to celebrate a classic! Oh yes, my darlings, the ultimate New Year’s Eve song was just around the corner: New Year’s Day by U2, one of my absolute faves! I mean, how can you not love this incredible anthem of hope, resilience, and optimism. This was one track I was so ready to go home to listen to… (after I'd added a bit more sparkle to my pink tutu). *

So until next time, darling tutulovers, keep twirling! And never forget, life’s a dance! Happy New Year, everyone!

Love,

Emma, your tutu-obsessed blogger
