Tutu Tuesday #8196: A Glimpse into the 1989 Tutu Scene!

Hello, my fellow tutu-lovers! It's your favourite pink-obsessed time-travelling ballerina, Emma, here, back with another edition of Tutu Tuesday! This week we're stepping back in time to the 24th of January, 1989. Let's slip on our pinkest, fluffiest tutus and travel to a time when leg warmers and leotards ruled the day...and night!

A Blast from the Past: 1989!

I've just hopped off the train, my pink tutu swirling with the wind as I hit the streets of… drumroll please… New York City! This bustling metropolis has always held a special place in my heart – the iconic dance studios, the legendary Broadway shows, the incredible fashion. 1989 was the peak of the 80s, so you can imagine the vibrant energy and fashion frenzy!

Ballet in 1989: A Symphony of Styles

Let's talk about ballet, darling! It was a time of daring and beautiful artistry. Think bold lines, elaborate choreography, and those incredible tutus. The famous New York City Ballet was putting on some spectacular performances, showcasing the artistry of legendary figures like George Balanchine, who was the artistic director. And guess what? Their ballerinas were already wearing tutus with beautiful, intricate embellishments and designs, much like today! It was a truly exciting time to be a ballet aficionado!

The Street Scene:

Now, as I strolled down the avenues in my tutu (yes, even on the streets! Don’t worry, it’s the 80s!), I saw a fashion revolution taking shape! You might have spotted these iconic looks: leg warmers paired with vibrant, colorful leggings, high-waisted denim, and oversized sweaters. There was a playful energy in the air – just like our tutu tuttles! This is why I always pack my travel bag with a mix of classic ballet-inspired items and fun, playful 80s-inspired pieces. It's the best of both worlds!

The Great Tutu Hunt!

And of course, no time-traveling ballet adventure is complete without a trip to a boutique or two. It's all about the perfect tutu for that time. The fabrics were just so luxurious: beautiful silks and satins – the stuff dreams are made of! It reminded me that there are treasures in every era when it comes to finding tutus! Even in the era of the Dancing Machine (remember that?)! It might be harder, but you might find vintage, truly special pieces, hidden away waiting to be discovered in those amazing thrift stores.

Making Tutu-ful Memories

This little journey back in time really got me thinking. Even though fashions evolve and trends come and go, the heart of dance – the power of expression, the beauty of the form – stays timeless! Every era has its own magic, and I wouldn't be a true Tutu-lover if I didn't revel in it.

Speaking of magic, there’s a lot to celebrate this week in 2023! The legendary New York City Ballet has their Balanchine showcase, which is always a treat. They’re also doing their Winter gala with the top ballet dancers in the world, just like they did back in 1989. There’s always magic in those tutu-filled moments on stage, you see!

Remember, darlings, there’s always time to embrace your inner tutu queen – in whatever style suits you.

Until next week, keep dancing and may your tutus be fabulous!

XOXO,

Emma
