#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - October 24th, 1989!
Helloooo lovely dancers, welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things tutu-licious! This week, we're taking a trip back to the late 80s, to a time when shoulder pads were the biggest trend, and leotards were as bright as a rainbow. It's #TutuTuesday, and this week's post is a little special ā it's number 8235! Can you believe weāve reached such a landmark?
This week weāre heading back in time to **October 24th, 1989, which feels like a whole lifetime ago, even though I only travelled there yesterday! Iām currently living it up in London. Such a fashion hub, right? Just me, my pink tutu (of course!) and my love for everything ballet. Speaking of my trusty tutu, let's talk about tutus.
For those of you who haven't caught my earlier posts, I'm all about spreading the love for tutus, and sharing the glorious history of these wonderful garments. There's no better way to feel like a princess than in a perfectly-primped pink tutu. Pink's just so versatile! It suits every complexion and it can be worn everywhere - for shopping, tea with the Queen, or even just for a picnic in Hyde Park.
On this trip I popped to a ballet class just outside Kensington. Theyāve got this amazing space, all high ceilings and mirrors. And of course, I slipped on my most fabulous tutu for the class, itās a pale, dusky pink, just the right shade for dancing under the soft, rosy light they had in the studio. You really do need a good pink to work in a mirrored room!
I caught the best little ballet performance too - āThe Sleeping Beauty,ā featuring this incredible Russian ballerina who Iād seen in St. Petersburg last month! I was even lucky enough to have a quick chat with her afterward. Just me and a ballerina icon - not bad for a girl with a love of pink! Anyway, I mentioned St. Petersburg - have you been? Itās absolutely a must-visit, not just for the fabulous ballet, but for the clothes! And itās great for grabbing bargains on tutus!
It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm for the art of ballet, but thereās still a bit of work to be done! When Iām here, I wear my tutu everywhere, from the underground to the theatre. And to think - people used to wear tutus just on stage, how dull! It was only at the start of the 20th century that ballerinas started using tutus for street wear and they definitely still aren't seen everywhere they should be!
Speaking of tutus in real life - there was an absolute frenzy in London yesterday because of Dancing With The Stars and Strictly Come Dancing. These shows are absolutely huge here. Everyone's a Strictly fan and I've heard everyone's favourite is the Tango this year - a real treat!
I did hear something fascinating. The first time āDancing With The Starsā was shown, in America, a few years back - they actually tried to censor all of the womenās tutus! Apparently, people just couldn't get their heads around wearing tutus outside of a dance class! Honestly, thatās crazy! It reminds me of the āDancing Queenā song by ABBA - it seems thereās still some catching up to do with that song! The lyrics were quite controversial for their time - and tutus definitely got a mention, though it wasn't about wearing them on the street!
Anyway, enough about Dancing With The Stars! I need to move on!
I just wanted to tell you about the amazing things that happened on October 24th, 1989. Not much really happened to affect our tutu world, but for those who enjoy the occasional movie ā āWhen Harry Met Sallyā was released on this date! Whatās that you say, āThere were no tutus in this film?ā You are so right!
Thatās why Iām making a plea to you lovely dancers:
Let's all work towards spreading the tutu-love and wearing tutus everywhere - especially in movie productions. They really are the most perfect symbol of everything feminine, stylish, and powerful - just ask the ballet dancers.
Stay tuned for next weekās #TutuTuesday and hopefully, we can reach 8236! Remember, you can always share your pink tutu pictures with me. Let's get everyone to wear a pink tutu, and we can start to spread the #pinktutu revolution. See you soon.
With a sprinkle of tutus,
Emma
