#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Post 8294 - 1990-12-11
Oh, darlings! It's Emma here, back with another fascinating delve into the whimsical world of the tutu! It's a chilly December morning in London, and you know what warms my toes better than anything? The sight of a beautiful pink tutu, naturally! But today, we're stepping back in time to December 11th, 1990, and taking a look at the enchanting world of ballet fashion back then!
Now, this Tuesday takes me back! This year, the Royal Ballet was putting on the "Nutcracker" in Covent Garden. The festive season, eh? Pure magic! It always seems to be the show for this time of year, a real staple, just like gingerbread houses and Christmas carols. And guess what? This performance of the "Nutcracker" had the entire audience on its feet by the end. A standing ovation is always such a wonderful feeling, I bet they were buzzing after that!
Imagine yourself in the theatre, those rich red velvet seats, the anticipation building as the curtain rises! We can picture a cascade of light shimmering across the stage, the graceful movements, the gorgeous costumes, the elegant ballerinas... ah, it makes me just want to put on my favourite pink tutu and leap right in!
This era saw an influx of colourful fabrics and dazzling designs. Imagine delicate layers of tulle, swishing around those graceful limbs! Just picturing it makes my heart skip a beat, the way the lights capture each flutter, each swirl, each pirouette, oh so beautiful! Of course, no ballerina in 1990 would be caught dead without her matching leotard. It's not always about tutus, you know, there’s a place for the leotard, and 1990 seemed to love those silky numbers, too.
So, why don't we take a step outside the theatre and peek into the shops that would've been dazzling with ballet supplies back then? Can you picture those little dance studios, all buzzing with the chatter of aspiring ballerinas? A bit like a fairytale come to life, isn't it? You wouldn't have to go far in those days, shops selling pointe shoes, dance wear and even tutus themselves were a little bit easier to come by then! My dear friend Polly told me the story of how she used to wear her white tutus all year round! Just like her white Christmas jumper, eh? What a fabulous way to live your tutu-dreams!
Don't think I haven't mentioned how exciting the world of ballet street and theatre was back in 1990! Oh my, imagine yourself in Covent Garden or a Broadway street show. Every move, every twirl, every elegant leap in that iconic tutu - truly inspiring! I know it’s not always about what you wear, but it’s definitely an added bonus to this fantastic performance. What an amazing decade for dance, all across the world, too!
So there you have it, a little peek into the ballet tutu scene of 1990! You can’t have your pointe shoes without your tutu! Don’t forget to add a dash of pink sparkle! I can’t wait for next week's trip through time. Remember to head over to pink-tutu.com for all my exciting posts.
Lots of love,
Emma xoxo
