Tutu Tuesday #8296: A Trip Back to 1990 - Where the Tutu Dream Was Still Young! 🩰

Hello lovelies, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things tutu!

Today, we’re taking a trip back in time to December 25th, 1990, for our #TutuTuesday journey. It’s a particularly exciting one for me, as we’ll be exploring the world of ballet in the early 1990s, a time when tutus were still firmly at the centre of dance fashion, but new trends were starting to blossom. And you know what they say, “Fashion comes back around, darlings!”

So hop on my magical train to the past (the journey’s far quicker this time, thanks to a generous donation from a particularly lovely ballet patron in London! They always adore a good vintage look! 😉). This time we’re off to Paris, the fashion capital of the world, but even back then, they knew a thing or two about the magic of a tutu!

Stepping into the 1990s Scene

Landing in Paris in 1990, the first thing I noticed was how vibrant and lively everything felt. There was this beautiful mix of old-world charm and modern energy, and it truly was inspiring! Now, while this is about a love of tutus, and of course we’re discussing them today, it’s a big day to have chosen. December 25th, 1990! What is going on? That's right, it’s Christmas Day! 🎁

Parisian streets are alive with decorations and Christmas markets are buzzing, the smell of crêpes, vin chaud, and roasted chestnuts wafting through the air! It’s honestly a dream, darlings! And just as dreamy was the fashion scene. Women were rocking those incredible puffy shoulders, leopard print galore, and the bright colours were so flattering! Remember when turquoise was trending, darling?! But, back to tutus.

The ballerinas I saw that day in Paris – whether in class or performing – were like fairytale princesses. From the fluffy romantic tutus of Giselle, the flowing, airy ones of Swan Lake, to the dramatic and elegant tutus for the more contemporary pieces. Let's not forget the magical tutus that adorned those delicate fairies on the stage, or the bold, fiery tutus that captured the fierce spirits of the ballerinas portraying characters like Carmen.

Of course, fashion was heavily influenced by the dance scene back then. So I've seen enough to see tutus appearing in other areas of Parisian fashion. Like at the shops, department stores were packed with clothes reminiscent of tutus. These were not your delicate and elegant tutus for the stage, these tutus, although beautiful and inspiring, are definitely not suitable for ballet! They were more whimsical and playful, perhaps just a suggestion of a tutu on a cute baby-doll dress or perhaps even a hint of tutu detail on a blouse, but all just a lovely, chic nod to the romantic style of the time. And, just like today, the pink hues and bold colours of tutus inspired every kind of fashion trend, from fashion houses to high-street brands, showing that tutus are really just the universal symbol of graceful chic.

Where to Spot Tutus: A Parisian Guide

I was particularly delighted to see tutus on the Parisian fashion scene at places like Printemps, Galeries Lafayette and even at those little boutiques in Le Marais. The designs I saw were captivating. They featured floral prints, shimmering fabrics, and delightful embroidery, always perfectly embracing those iconic tutu shapes that we all adore. These shops always put on the most glamorous shows. The perfect opportunity to put a tutu on your Parisian shopping list!

Speaking of iconic shapes, let’s talk about what we know as ‘The Romantic Tutu’. That dreamy, billowing shape was everywhere! It truly embodied the feminine spirit and had such an elegant feel about it. Think Degas paintings – but brought to life! That was the feeling of 1990's tutu fashion! We even found a beautiful antique boutique where they were selling a vintage collection of romantic tutus and ballet shoes! This little shop is also a treasure trove of vintage fashion and decor – a delightful, old-world haven with an almost fairytale charm!

You may not find that romantic shape everywhere, it may be lost to those that only enjoy a 'tutu on the stage,' but you will always find that essence, that spirit of femininity, in any style you love. The sheer, graceful elegance of a tutu was definitely a fashion force to be reckoned with in those days, even inspiring some really iconic hairstyles, too! I’m definitely channeling a big '90s hair look today – high and sleek with that ballerina's sleek chignon. It just adds the perfect touch!
