#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 22nd January 1991 (Post #8300)
Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time-travelling blogger, and it's #TutuTuesday! I'm so excited to be back in the Land of the Rising Sun! I'm absolutely smitten with this magical place! The colours, the fashions, the energy - it’s all so breathtaking! You really have to experience it to believe it!
Today I'm whisking us back to the 22nd of January 1991 - just before my favourite part of the year: spring! We're back in the heart of Tokyo, surrounded by all things fashion, elegance, and of course, ballet!
Now, you all know I adore tutus. It's more than just a love, it's an obsession! A way of life, you could even say! So naturally, when I hear "1991", my mind immediately jumps to the phenomenal dance piece by Maurice Béjart, Boléro. You might be surprised to learn, this amazing piece, so famous for its dramatic and theatrical movements, is turning 40 this year! You know I'll be adding a Boléro themed #TutuTuesday to the blog later in the year!
But let's delve a little deeper into what was happening in the ballet world on the 22nd of January 1991. Well, my dears, the Tokyo Ballet was celebrating the world of ballet in style! I hear that there were amazing performances in theatres across Tokyo - can you imagine all those tutus and magnificent costumes shimmering under the lights?! My heart flutters just thinking about it! You know I would have been there in a flash, embracing every ounce of the spectacle.
This is such a brilliant time to be exploring ballet! Fashion has really embraced the whimsical and elegant elements of the world of ballet! Imagine – swirling skirts, satin, and ethereal tulle; I hear even everyday fashion is being influenced by these stunning ballet aesthetics! Oh darling, isn't it simply fabulous?!
Just yesterday I popped into the Shinjuku district - it's such a fab place for all things fashion! I'm currently in love with their vibrant street style! Think high fashion and street style intertwined - the bold use of colour and daring textures. It's quite the mix! I saw this incredible woman with the most dazzling combination of pieces - an elaborate embroidered kimono teamed with a dramatic skirt that seemed to just float on air! I am positive that the inspiration was definitely rooted in the dance world, a beautiful synergy of high fashion and classic grace.
As you all know, I am a massive fan of trains and I'm so excited about Japan’s high-speed bullet trains - they are just so efficient and elegant. They've helped make travelling across this incredible country an absolute breeze! And of course, I travel in style - always, darling! My travel wardrobe includes the most charming combination of vintage pink tutus, feather boas, and a delicate little hat - perfect for my ballerina train journeys. (And for those curious - my suitcases always include extra tutus - never too many tutus!)
Speaking of stylish travel - have you ever heard of the magical Sakura trains? Imagine, the beautiful cherry blossom season arriving in April! I'm planning a trip specifically to experience the spectacle and capture those beautiful pink blooms for my blog. (Perhaps even wear a tutu that matches the delicate pink blossom!)
Speaking of my blog, dear readers! If you’re just joining us here, I write this blog - www.pink-tutu.com - every Tuesday, where I chronicle my adventures, exploring the world of ballet history and its impact on everything around us, fashion, culture, the lot! I share everything I love: tutus, travel, and of course, my favourite fashion finds! Don’t forget to use the hashtag #TutuTuesday! And, of course, please share your own #TutuTuesday stories with me!
So let’s continue this exciting voyage back to 22nd of January 1991 in the fashion capital of Tokyo! What can we learn from this magical time?
Firstly, let's not forget the powerful influence of dance - particularly ballet. It's not just about twirling around on stage in an exquisite tutu! The power of dance can truly inspire! It ignites our hearts, encourages creativity, and brings magic into everyday life. It's all thanks to those incredible, bold costumes and daring choreography that continue to captivate us today.
I'm so happy to have shared a little bit of the magic with you! But now I have to go! My trip to Tokyo isn't going to be complete until I've enjoyed a luxurious tea ceremony, followed by some of the most divine green tea! I hear a cup of Matcha will be the perfect way to embrace a little piece of Japanese history - especially alongside the most stunning, cherry blossom-shaped wagashi! (Yes, they even make wagashi into a perfect, twirling tutu form! And in the most amazing shades of pink!).
But darling, until next Tuesday, please do enjoy a little twirl in your own tutu! Let's all celebrate our individual style and express ourselves through the captivating power of fashion and ballet! And as always, let's remember that there's never too much pink - particularly when it’s paired with a perfect, ballerina-inspired outfit!
Stay fabulous my dears, and keep twirling!
Emma.
