TutuTuesday: A Blast From The Past, August 13th 1991! 💖🩰

Hiya darlings! It's your favourite tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, and it's TutuTuesday! 🎉 This week, we're taking a little trip down memory lane, back to August 13th 1991, to see how the world of ballet was doing. Remember, darling, tutus are our love language here at Pink-Tutu.com so grab your tea, put on your pinkest tutu, and let's go!

As a seasoned time traveller, the London Underground is my favourite way to get around, especially for historical explorations! So this week, I jumped on a trusty old Northern Line (let’s pretend there were no delays, because I don't do chaos!) and zipped myself straight to The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

Just imagine it, lovelies! The Royal Ballet in full swing, the cobblestones, the scent of roses, The Old Vic just down the road - It’s like something out of a Jane Austen novel but with more glitter and tights, right? 💖

Right, before I get lost in the nostalgia, we’ve got history to uncover! Now, 1991 wasn’t necessarily a ground-breaking year for tutus, but it was still a fabulous time for ballet. The Royal Ballet, for example, were about to go on tour with a production of 'La Bayadère' - so picture those lovely, soft pink tutus swishing around the stage! 🥰 (The Paris Opera Ballet were touring it as well – a beautiful synchronicity). You can still find recordings of both from around that time. Have a look if you fancy a trip back to the 90s! ✨

Now, one of my absolute favourites to see was "Swan Lake". Oh darling! There was Darcey Bussell, that iconic black swan costume - chef’s kiss! Just perfect! I went with a whole bunch of lovely ladies from the Royal Opera House Ballet School, and after the show, we had a divine cream tea at one of those darling little tea rooms in Covent Garden. You couldn't ask for a better afternoon. 🫖

While ballet was definitely in its element, fashion-wise, 1991 was an era of bright colours, big hair, and power shoulders - you remember! The 80s weren’t quite over. The idea of pairing ballet with your day-to-day wardrobe wasn’t quite so in fashion back then. Oh, darling! But we all know that ballet is the key to ultimate femininity, and we can definitely channel a bit of the power shoulders and bright colours when we put on our tutu today! 😉

It wouldn't be a proper #TutuTuesday without some shopping inspiration, would it? So what was on trend back in 1991? Imagine my absolute joy when I stumbled across a charming little boutique called 'Dancewear Direct' in the West End! It was an absolute dream - just imagine, tiers of the softest pink tulle, velvet dance bags, and shoes of every colour you could think of - I'd have stayed in that store forever if I hadn't had other places to see! 🩰

Just because things were a little different in the 90s doesn’t mean we can’t still find inspiration for our modern-day tutu-wear, darling. Think about all the classic tutu shapes that are still used - the tutu à la Francaise, the tutu romantique, the tutu classique, they were all alive and kicking in 1991. 🩰

Let’s bring the magic of ballet back, darling! That’s what makes it such a treat! So go ahead and have a blast with ballet style in 2023. Just add your personal flair and let those pink tutus dance. 🥰

Of course, my little dears, we always love a historical connection so tell me: what are your thoughts on tutus from 1991? Were you dancing at the time, or watching some of the brilliant ballets they performed? What did you think about the fashion of the day? Let’s share our tutu-tastic thoughts and keep this historical celebration alive!

Now, darling, remember what my mission is - to get everyone wearing a pink tutu! Remember to get your orders in from my website, www.pink-tutu.com and make sure to tag #TutuTuesday on all your social media to spread the tutu-liciousness! 💖

I’ll see you all next Tuesday, darlings, with a fresh trip back to ballet history!

Lots of love and sparkly wishes,

Emma 🩰
