#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - April 9th 1996
Hello my darlings! 🩰💖
It's Tuesday which means it's time for another exciting foray into the fabulous world of ballet tutus! I'm Emma, your time-travelling ballerina blogger, and I'm absolutely thrilled to be bringing you another dose of tutu history straight from 1996!
This week, my travels have taken me to Paris - the heart of romance, fashion and of course, the home of ballet! Can you believe we're already in April?! Time flies when you're swirling through centuries in your favourite pink tutu.
Before we dive into the enchanting world of tutus, I absolutely have to share my Paris adventure. I arrived by train, of course, (who wouldn't choose a romantic journey by train in a dreamy tulle creation?) and found myself right in the heart of the city's vibrant energy. There was so much to see - cobbled streets lined with enchanting boutiques filled with beautiful fabrics and exquisite millinery, art galleries filled with vibrant colours and inspiring narratives, and oh, the patisseries! It's no wonder this city has captivated artists and dreamers for centuries.
Speaking of art, it was a simply divine coincidence to be in Paris on this particular day, because, today is the grand opening of the Musée Yves Saint Laurent! The famous fashion designer, a true visionary, is being celebrated in this new museum, showcasing his extraordinary designs. Can you imagine a better way to start your day?
Now, onto the tutus! 💖
Today, my dear readers, we're venturing back in time to explore what ballerinas were wearing in 1996. I must say, this decade was quite a pivotal moment for tutu styles, especially for classical ballet. There was a growing trend toward romanticism in costume design. The romantic era of ballet has always been a favourite of mine. You just cannot beat the flow of the fabric, the delicate floral decorations, and of course the iconic, delicate tutus, both the short tutus and the long, flowing "Giselle"-style skirts, made famous by Romantic ballet icon, Carlotta Grisi.
Speaking of tutus, did you know that in 1996 the famous Tutu Du Monde collection for classical dancers was created? This collection revolutionised the way dancers performed by offering incredibly lightweight tutus and fabrics that move gracefully and beautifully with the body, but also allowed dancers to perform with such fluidity and freedom! It’s truly an inspiring feat of engineering, don't you think?
While on the subject of innovation, I must mention that this was also the year the "ballet core" fashion trend started to take shape, even though we’d see it blossom to its peak popularity much later! This trend draws on the grace and elegance of ballerinas, particularly those gorgeous long lines of the dancer's physique. Think feminine fabrics, stylish, simple lines, delicate shades of pink, with a healthy dash of "tutu chic" that makes it extra fabulous.
It’s been so much fun taking you on a trip through time to 1996, exploring its fashions, ballet world, and even catching a glimpse of Yves Saint Laurent's opening day! As always, remember that life is best lived in your favourite tutu and always believe in the power of pink!
Don't forget to join me next Tuesday for another exciting episode in Ballet Tutu History! In the meantime, tell me what your favourite style of ballet tutu is in the comments! And remember, pink tutus are the perfect way to make every day feel magical. ✨💖
Until next time, darlings!

P.S. I'm adding a special extra-long, sparkly pink tulle "fashion advice" section today just because Paris always inspires me to share all things "fashion fabulous."

I couldn't resist sharing some of my favourite finds in the City of Lights. Remember that one of my favourite ways to make every day extra special is by incorporating pink tulle wherever possible, even in everyday outfits. I've put together a little Paris-inspired capsule wardrobe featuring pink tulle for your weekend fun:
- A delicate pink silk dress, with its own built-in layered tulle skirt. Just add a pair of simple but elegant heels and you’re ready to conquer the world. Don't forget a sparkly belt!
- Pink ballerina flats: A stylish yet comfy everyday option, and they look amazing with floral dresses. Don’t forget to accessorise with a gorgeous, matching silk floral scarf.
- Pink silk pashmina: For those crisp Parisian nights or just for adding that extra dose of luxuriousness. This can easily be transformed into a statement scarf if you pin it at the front in the "ballet bun" style we all know and love.
Don't be afraid to try incorporating tulle in your daily look! A tulle scarf or a little tulle detail can bring a touch of whimsy and glamour to even the most basic outfits.
I'd love to see your style creations! Tag #PinkTutuStyle on social media for a chance to be featured on the blog!
Stay chic, and remember, darling - never be afraid to make a grand entrance in a beautiful, pink tutu. 💖✨
