#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Post #8686 (June 16th, 1998)
Oh, hello darlings! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, where pink tutus reign supreme! Today, we're taking a twirl back in time to the 16th of June, 1998. A truly glorious date, my dears, especially if you're a fan of fabulous fashion and beautiful ballet.
I've just jetted back from the most amazing trip to Paris – a whirlwind of champagne, croissants, and exquisite haute couture, but of course, I’m always happy to be back in my comfy little Derbyshire cottage (although, I'm not sure I could resist another jaunt to Paris if a gorgeous pair of Jimmy Choos happened to wink at me). Anyway, let’s get back to the tutu story…
A Bit of Tutu History
The year is 1998 and, my lovelies, ballet tutus are truly at their peak. We’re seeing all sorts of fascinating styles! The Romantic Tutu – which originated in the mid 19th century, you know - is still incredibly popular with its soft layers and wispy fabric. Then there's the classic “Bell” or “Pagan” tutu, with its full, cascading layers, giving the illusion of a gorgeous bell. Both of these are beautifully presented on the stage, bringing a sense of movement and lightness to the dancer. And let's not forget the daring and playful "Skirt” tutu! It was this fabulous creation, featuring the revolutionary shorter style, that sparkled its way into our hearts during the late 20th century! I’m thrilled to be here to see the tutu story evolve because, let’s be honest, who can resist a little bit of tulle and elegance?
Time to Take a Dip in the Culture!
Now, what was happening on the 16th of June, 1998? Well, if you're in the mood for a beautiful ballet performance, the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden are performing “The Sleeping Beauty”, a classic of the repertoire, and you just know it will be absolutely dazzling, from the shimmering costumes to the powerful performances!
A Glimpse into Fashion
In the world of fashion, 1998 saw the continued popularity of the iconic slip dress, something I'm particularly fond of with my tulle petticoat peeking out at the bottom. The perfect way to embrace a feminine flair! There were also those playful and colorful '90s minidresses with their sweet details like ruffles and polka dots.
Taking a Fashion Journey through Time
My travels take me everywhere – all by train, naturally! I wouldn't be caught dead in an aeroplane with my prized pink tutus – let’s just say, they'd get crushed, and no one wants to see a crinkled, wilting tulle dream. Train journeys give me so much time to ponder all the tutu transformations and observe the evolution of dance. Seeing these shifts is truly inspirational, and, well, quite frankly, absolutely thrilling!
My Favourite Tutu Time!
Oh, I can’t leave this post without mentioning one of the most important elements of my beloved tutus – the color pink, of course! Pink is always my first choice when I want to create an outfit, from dainty pale to the most shocking fuschia. There's just something so happy and romantic about the hue, and it simply elevates the elegance of any tutu! And, it makes me feel extra twirly and wonderful!
Don’t Forget to Join in!
Remember, my darlings, life is all about making it your own and celebrating our unique style. If you're looking for a little extra sparkle, you should grab yourself a lovely, pink tutu! Just picture the fabulous feeling of that delicate fabric swirling around you. It's simply magic! You know the rule, if it makes you twirl, it makes you happy! And happiness is simply a delicious must!
Until next Tuesday,
Lots of pink tutu love,
Emma xoxo
