#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: June 15th 1999 - Post Number 8738!

Hello darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina, Emma, back for another glorious #TutuTuesday! Today we're taking a trip back to the late 90s, a time when the world was still a little bit dazed from the millennial changeover. Buckle up, lovelies, as we waltz into the glorious, gauzy, glittery history of ballet tutus!

Before I spill the tulle-tastic tea on all things 1999, let me tell you how my little time travel adventures are going! Just landed back from a fabulous jaunt to New York, where I was utterly blown away by the sheer talent and energy at the New York City Ballet. I swear, their performances are practically intoxicating, like a magnificent whirlwind of movement and music! And of course, I couldn't resist dipping my toes into the wonderful fashion scene - there's a whole shop in SoHo dedicated to vintage tutus! Honestly, you'd think I'd died and gone to heaven. But as usual, my time travel adventures are fuelled by a series of performances, and the magic of ballet always leads me home, back to my little cottage in Derbyshire.

But let's get back to the task at hand - 1999 and the tutu! You know, there’s something wonderfully whimsical and feminine about the tutus of this era. It was the time of puffy, romantic tutus – think layers and layers of tulle, the more the merrier! And, of course, it was all about that classic romantic ballerina style: ethereal and ethereal, all delicate colours, and perfectly flowing lines. They were the kind of tutus that made you dream of dancing under the moonlight, the kind of tutu that made you believe that anything was possible.

One of the biggest influences on tutus in the late 90s, you see, was the revival of classical ballet. Companies were rediscovering the works of the old masters like Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky, and this revival came with a certain level of elegance, a certain refined style, and guess what? Those stunningly simple, perfectly poised tutus are practically born for classical ballet! The emphasis was all about elegance and purity of form. They just make the dancers look absolutely breathtaking!

One iconic ballerina from this period was, of course, the one and only Sylvie Guillem. Sylvie embodies the epitome of that graceful, classically inspired tutu look. Her effortless movement and sheer elegance in these tutus, my darlings, is simply phenomenal! Remember the stunning tutus designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier for her “Cinderella”? Absolute magic, my dears, and a real fashion highlight.

And then, on the other side of the coin, there was also a certain playful boldness to tutu design in the 90s. We saw designers start to play with textures, like satin, velvet, and even lace. They used these materials to add texture and visual interest. You know I love a touch of vintage! I snagged a beautiful velvet tutu in a dusty pink shade at the SoHo shop that was absolutely delightful! I couldn't help myself - it would have been rude not to.

Remember too, this era saw the rise of "Neoclassical" ballet, which was a lovely mix of classical tradition and modern movement. Neoclassical ballets really lent themselves to exciting, playful tutu designs, incorporating fabrics, colours, and movement in all sorts of wonderful ways. They’re truly fun, and modern - a fabulous fusion of both classical ballet and a more contemporary touch.

1999, in particular, was a remarkable year for tutus, not only because of these fabulous styles but also because there were some stunning ballets out in the world that helped to create that unforgettable 90s ballet tutu vibe.

Think of the spectacular productions like "The Sleeping Beauty" at the Royal Ballet! Can you imagine those perfectly crafted classical tutus twirling on the stage? A fairytale!

It was also the year, you see, of the “Nutcracker”, that annual tradition so cherished by ballerinas and ballet enthusiasts everywhere.

Remember this, you gorgeous little ballerina, 1999 was also the year when I bought my very first pink tutu! I still remember that magical feeling - I was standing there, in a little boutique near my house, trying it on, swirling around, a gigantic pink fluffy cloud! It was just pure, perfect happiness, and I’ve never looked back since!

To end this trip down memory lane, darlings, let me share a bit about what's happening in the ballet world on the 15th of June, 1999.

I see a ballet performance in Paris of “The Nutcracker”, the one ballet every girl wants to see, by the incredible Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris. It's going to be absolutely breathtaking! The sets, the costumes, and, of course, the sheer elegance of it all... I can just imagine how magical the scene is in that old Paris theatre.

Right then, my dears, I have to jet! A magical world of tulle and dance awaits, a journey to explore the wonders of dance history, and hopefully, inspire you all to take a leap in the fabulous world of pink tutus! And please don’t forget to take your own little tutu journey!
