#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - June 22nd, 1999!

Hello my lovely Tutu Twirlers!

Welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com, where we explore the wondrous history of the ballet tutu, one twirl at a time. It's #TutuTuesday, and today, we're taking a time machine back to June 22nd, 1999! I just love this period; it’s all about bold colours, shimmering sequins and that incredible energy of the new millennium, which feels very close on the horizon. I’ve been to a few performances over the past week - it's hard not to, really - and the joy of watching the stories unfold on stage, the costumes, the sheer spectacle, well, it's almost enough to make you burst with joy!

I’ve just arrived back in London after a quick trip to see a show at the Royal Opera House. Honestly, I felt the need to escape the stifling summer heat of Derbyshire for a few days. I found a delightful tea shop nearby which had the most fabulous collection of teacups and, you won’t believe it, they even had a plate shaped like a tutu! It was adorable and naturally, I purchased it! They serve a rather lovely pink iced tea, which I just had to order! This whole adventure is so typical of the magic of a #TutuTuesday!

Now, where were we? Oh yes! June 22nd, 1999…

Let's journey back to the world of ballet fashion at the close of the 20th century! This period, in a nutshell, is a real testament to the enduring power of the tutu - we’re seeing a continuation of the experimentation and re-imagining of its form that we’ve discussed previously, with designers really playing with shape, length and embellishment! It’s like a rainbow of styles all twirling on stage!

Firstly, let’s talk about romantic tutus. You know those graceful, wispy tutus with their flowing layers of tulle and delicate embroideries? They are the ultimate epitome of the feminine spirit! Think swirling clouds, like ballerinas have taken to the air, it’s magical. But by 1999, they've been taken up a notch. Imagine them in brighter, bolder colours than before, perhaps a vibrant cerulean blue or a bold, ruby red. These vibrant colours just bring an energy and vibrancy that absolutely thrills!

But it isn't just romantic tutus that are stealing the show. 1999 sees a bold resurgence of the tutu's more modern sister – the modern tutu. Remember our exploration of the revolutionary work of George Balanchine in the 1950s? Well, he's been having quite the impact on designers for decades, influencing many! The modern tutu is all about stark lines and powerful movements. Shorter, structured and, dare I say, often bolder in its design, this type of tutu gives ballerinas the space to truly flex their artistry and strength! Some modern tutus even use multiple layers of sheer material that move with the dancers’ movements creating a beautiful play of light and shadow as the ballerinas turn. It's a bold expression of strength and athleticism on stage, and in the world of fashion. Think a striking silhouette in black, punctuated with flashes of bold gold, or a brilliant fuchsia number that sets a fire under your feet! It's like watching a warrior woman grace the stage!

Remember that 1999 wasn't just about revolutionary choreography and experimental tutu designs. It was a year brimming with inspiring performances.

Speaking of performances… Let’s talk about the Bolshoi Ballet - they’re putting on a Giselle and everyone is absolutely raving! Now Giselle has got to be my favourite! The classic tragic tale of love, loss, and betrayal is brought to life in such a breathtaking way!

On June 22nd 1999, a little closer to home, The Royal Ballet are hosting their spectacular Gala performance, bringing together all the world's best. Imagine! To think about all these different types of ballet styles under one roof, it’s simply exquisite! It’s going to be such a treat, with iconic choreographers and talented ballerinas sharing their talents! I just can’t wait to experience it. I might have to purchase a new dress for the occasion. It really feels like a perfect way to celebrate #TutuTuesday, wouldn't you agree?

It’s hard to know what else is going on today in the world of ballet. I haven’t caught up with the fashion news as my suitcase has been packed, I’m taking a train up to Glasgow! There’s a fantastic ballet school in Glasgow and they've invited me to share a ballet class. This is a wonderful opportunity to chat to budding ballerinas about their aspirations, and tell them a bit about this incredible history we are sharing. I'll have a wonderful pink tutu and tiara for them all! I also found the cutest ballerina handbag, shaped like a pointe shoe with a little pink ribbon for the bow. Oh darling, if I get the time I’m just going to have to share my travel outfits in the next #TutuTuesday.

Now that you’re all in the know, let’s chat about YOU, my wonderful #TutuTuesday friends.

What did you think about the ballet designs of this period?

Was there a particular show or performance that moved you back in 1999?

How did the tutu of the time reflect the mood and spirit of the era? *

Tell me all your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. Until next week, remember, keep twirling, and never be afraid to embrace the beauty of a pink tutu! **
