Hello, my lovely Tutu-ettes! Itās your favourite pink-tutu-clad blogger, Emma, back with another instalment of #TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History! š©°š
Today marks post number 8893 in this fabulous chronicle of all things tutu, and it's a real corker, so grab a cuppa and get comfy ā this oneās a right little dance-athon!
As a fellow fashion fanatic and incurable tutu enthusiast, Iām always delighted to whisk you all back through time to discover the story behind this most exquisite piece of attire! Today, Iām taking you on a trip back to the heady days of 4th June 2002, and boy, oh boy, do we have a story to tellā¦
Before I get going, let me just gush for a moment about how thrilling it is to be in Paris. My goodness, this city just bursts with romance, culture and of course, the most wonderful shops! Shopping in Paris is an adventure, and the array of Parisian fabrics and designs is enough to make even the most discerning tutu connoisseur giddy! It really doesnāt get any more chic than that! š
Anyway, letās step back in time, shall we? Back to June 2002, when we see the emergence of Ballet de lāOpĆ©ra National de Paris, with their sensational new production of "Le Lac des Cygnes". Can you even imagine?! A full-scale production of Swan Lake, starring none other than Sylvie Guillem! You bet I went, my darling tutu-ettes, and it was divine!
That exquisite performance inspired me to dig a bit deeper into the tutuās history and I discovered that the tutus of 2002 weren't just a costume, they were statements of artistic evolution and technical brilliance! Ballet in 2002 was moving at lightning speed, embracing new concepts and demanding tutus that matched the spirit of innovation.
Imagine for a moment, darling readers, the tutu worn by Sylvie Guillem. Imagine the soft tulle, the elegant tailoring, and the way it swirled around her as she danced. That tutu was no mere costume - it was a symbol of grace, artistry, and the ultimate femininity, a perfect compliment to Sylvie Guillem's own captivating style!
Sylvie Guillem, the trailblazer: She really shook things up in 2002, and she did so wearing these incredible tutus, perfectly balancing the romantic and the avant-garde, with unparalleled technical prowess! I absolutely adore this womanās energy, commitment and the passion she brings to her performance! And those tutus? Simply stunning!
Remember how we mentioned tutus being āstatementsā? In 2002, we also witnessed the exciting development of the ādeconstructed tutu.ā This innovative take on the traditional tutu involved utilizing unconventional materials like mesh, satin, and even denim to create these incredibly unique and often asymmetric designs. The deconstructed tutu allowed for freedom of movement, challenging traditional conventions and showcasing the dancersā bodies and the athleticism they had at their disposal! It was a game changer, trust me!
Speaking of game-changers, Iām going to throw a little vintage shopping trip into the mix! You know how much I love a good vintage find, and today, Iāve managed to find a divine little antique shop that's overflowing with delightful things. A few hidden gems nestled within, including an old copy of "La Sylphide" - an old ballerina handbook published in 1938 - it is brimming with all kinds of fantastic stories of tutus in early 20th century ballet! It was amazing! I found this gem right in the heart of Paris - and if thatās not an adventure, I don't know what is!
You'd be amazed at what we find in these places - it truly is a goldmine for my pink-tutu-loving soul! š But back to 2002 and that beautiful performance, it inspired a few fascinating facts about tutus I wanted to share with you all.
Did you know that tutus in 2002 were still hand-crafted using painstakingly precise methods?! Every single stitch is made with the utmost care, to ensure the delicate and stunning results we see on the stage. Every fold of tulle, every seam, it's a labour of love, an act of craftsmanship that makes them incredibly special and gives each tutu its unique and magical personality. And for those of you who wear a tutu - whether at the ballet barre, in the theatre or on your way to a Parisian soirĆ©e - know this, itās not just an item of clothing, itās a masterpiece, a testament to incredible skill, dedication, and history.
Now I have to dash to catch a train down to the city. The Parisian train stations always bustle with life. And can I tell you, I spotted some incredibly well-dressed gentlemen on the platform in suits that Iām absolutely dying to copy! Such a delightful mix of styles here in France!
