#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: May 25th, 2004 - A Time for Romance!
Hello lovelies! It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller, bringing you another installment of #TutuTuesday! Today, I'm whisked back to May 25th, 2004. And oh my goodness, darling, what a romantic time this was!
(Number 8996 of the Ballet Tutu History blog, www.pink-tutu.com. Posted on Tuesday, May 25th, 2020.)
Let me set the scene, shall we? It's a Tuesday - my favourite day of the week, obviously! - and I've arrived in Paris, the city of love, which seems perfectly fitting given the theme of the day. Think classic Parisian chic, but with a dash of my signature pink! I'm talking about that soft, dreamy pink, the kind that makes you feel like a princess ready for the grandest of balls!
And guess what else is romantic? Ballet! As you know, darling, I am obsessed with ballet. I've been twirling in tutus since I was a little girl in Derbyshire, England, dreaming of leaping onto the stage. So, needless to say, I was thrilled when my time machine dropped me right outside the magnificent Palais Garnier. Yes, that iconic opera house featured in the Phantom of the Opera. It doesn't get more dramatic or more romantic, does it?
But what's the significance of May 25th, 2004? You ask, darling, and rightfully so! On this date, 2004, one of the world's most esteemed ballets was celebrating a milestone! The Royal Ballet, renowned for their exquisite choreography and their legendary ballerinas, was presenting a special performance of their iconic “Romeo and Juliet”, choreographed by Sir Kenneth MacMillan. Can you even imagine the beauty of the romantic dance unfolding beneath those magnificent crystal chandeliers? The whispers of anticipation, the sighs of delight! It was absolutely breathtaking. And believe me, darling, when it comes to breathtaking beauty, this ballet was simply le top!
So, naturally, I couldn’t resist! Dressed in my most glorious pink tutu, with my hair in a perfect French twist (I always like to blend in with the Parisian chic) and my face flushed with excitement, I snagged a seat front and centre. Oh, how I dreamed of joining the dance! But for now, I settled in to soak up the atmosphere, taking mental notes of all the latest ballet fashion trends. I’ve gotta say, 2004 wasn't the only romantic date! Ballet costumes in those days were all about flowing lines and delicate fabrics, a touch of shimmer, and plenty of graceful, feminine shapes.
Speaking of fashion, 2004 saw a glorious return of some classic fashion trends. It was the year that skinny jeans, the ultimate leg-lengthening must-have, truly took the world by storm. Think high-waisted denim, the perfect canvas for showing off that enviable, ballerina physique! And the whole look was effortlessly completed with a cute little crop top, the ultimate way to make a fashion statement. The girls loved their flirty mini skirts and lacey tops, while the boys couldn’t get enough of the laid-back, cool-guy vibes of a plain white tee and a stylishly oversized jacket.
After the ballet, I took a trip around Paris, relishing the aroma of fresh pastries from charming boulangeries and sipping the perfect latte while soaking up the ambiance. Paris always has that "je ne sais quoi", doesn't it, darling? It’s an intoxicating blend of art, fashion, and joie de vivre - all the things I adore!
My day wouldn't be complete without some shopping, of course! As I perused the fashionable boutiques of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, I couldn't resist buying myself a stunning silk scarf. It's a rich, decadent shade of pink, perfectly matched to my tutu. After all, darling, every true ballerina knows that the right accessories are crucial.
Now, I know you're wondering how I funded my trip to Paris! You see, darling, a secret perk of time travelling is being able to perform my own ballet routine on various stages. It’s always a fun twist – imagine dancing the famous Swan Lake on the Colosseum in Ancient Rome! Who needs a day job, eh?
However, don't forget, darling, that travelling through time can be a tad expensive. So, my dear readers, I would truly appreciate it if you all would join me in wearing pink tutus. This world needs more pink, don’t you think? The brighter, the better! So next time you need a little boost of joy, darling, throw on a tutu. You’ll thank me later.
Now, until next time, remember to be bold, be brilliant, and don’t be afraid to express your own personal style.
