#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Time! 🩰💖

Hello lovelies! It's Emma here, back for another whirlwind #TutuTuesday journey through the fascinating history of our beloved tutus! 💖

This week we're hopping on a time machine and heading back to August 31st, 2004. Imagine, the world was a slightly different place back then. Britney Spears was dominating the airwaves with "Toxic," Beyoncé was reigning supreme with "Crazy in Love", and we were all wearing our best crop tops and low-rise jeans (don't judge, we were all about it then). 😉 Oh, and "Mean Girls" was the hottest movie on the planet!

But amongst all the pop culture frenzy, tutus were still twinkling! Back in 2004, the world of ballet was flourishing, and tutus were holding their rightful place as icons of elegance and artistry.

So let's dive into the dance history books! Today's topic? A peek at the early days of tutu design - the first glimpse of these ethereal creations and their evolution into the glorious pieces of fabric that we love today!

(Oh, and before we begin, don't forget to visit my favourite online boutique for the best selection of tutus in pink, naturally! Just click here for my ultimate Pink Tutu Shop.)

The "Whirlwind" Skirt - From the Dance Halls to the Stage

Did you know the very first tutu was called a whirlwind skirt? It makes sense, right? Imagine, it was essentially a circular skirt, made of lightweight fabric, allowing for all sorts of exciting spins and twirls! Now that's a dancer's dream, right?

The "whirlwind skirt" debuted on the ballet stage in the late 18th century. Back then, dancing meant lots of swishing skirts and elaborate steps. The whirlwind wasn't a revolution - it was more like a refined evolution of the styles that came before it. Think graceful movements and flowing lines.

This earlier tutu was typically a modest affair, often knee-length or slightly longer. It wasn't all frills and fluff just yet - it served as a starting point, a canvas for the beauty that was yet to come.

The Romantics & A Dreamy, Wispy Vision

Moving forward a few decades, we reach the Romantic era in ballet (early 19th century). This was a period that saw a huge surge of creativity and expression in all arts, and ballet was no exception! It was in this era that tutus, much as we know them today, started taking flight!

Imagine - swirling skirts reaching up to the ankles, and delicate fabric cascading like a graceful waterfall. It was in this romantic time that tutus went through a major transformation - becoming more wispy and flowing. The Romantics were all about capturing the ephemeral, the intangible - and tutus provided the perfect medium for expressing this artistry!

By the 1840s, the Romantic tutu was reaching new heights of delicacy and charm. Think light chiffon, sparkling embellishments, and the perfect combination of whimsy and elegance.

But guess what? Even though it was becoming lighter and lighter, this version of the tutu was still quite modest in length! You won't see those high-flying leggy designs yet, oh no! Those would come a bit later.

A Shortened, Daring Look

Let's jump forward to the mid 19th century!

Now this was the time when the ballerina truly began taking centre stage - showing off their beautiful legs in all their glory!

Tutus began getting much, much shorter. What began as a modestly long and flowing design started getting chopped, creating a shorter skirt for those graceful steps! It was during this period that ballet began its transition towards the style that's become synonymous with the classical form.

You could say this was a pivotal time in the tutu's story - a period when it shed its earlier romanticism and began embracing its feminine elegance.

A Fashion Revolution

Of course, as the world of ballet evolved so too did the designs of our favourite garment! In the 20th century, tutus were refined, reworked, and reborn into even more dazzling creations.

Think innovative materials, creative silhouettes, and a continued embrace of all things beautiful! I especially adore the Romantic Tutus from the mid-20th century. Imagine! They embodied a dreamy, light, and oh-so-romantic feel with their cascading tulle layers and delicate embroidery.

It's interesting to note that while some dancers embraced the full romantic silhouette, others preferred a more streamlined and minimalist style - you could call it the Demi-pointe Tutu ! These variations added a touch of edginess to the classic look!

And talking of edges, who can forget the explosion of colours and designs that came along in the latter half of the 20th century? Ballet, like any art form, has embraced a more experimental approach!

### From The Stage To Street Styles

What to Wear? A Timeless Choice

This week's time travelling outfit is all about romantic whimsy - my all-time favourite style! Think a flowy pink tutu in delicate tulle. I am topping it with a beautiful vintage blouse and a pair of silver pumps. And of course, my ballet flats!

No look is complete without a few accessories! A delicate silver chain with a tiny pink pearl, a few colourful bangles and a stylish headband complete this timeless ensemble. It's the perfect look for a night at the theatre or a trip to the ballet.

### #TutuTuesday – My Ballet Diary

Here's what I'm looking forward to this week! I'm so excited to head back to the Derbyshire Ballet School and get back into the groove. I've been feeling extra creative this week and am looking forward to channeling those energies in a ballet class. Oh! I’ve been asked to teach an adult beginner class at the ballet school. It’s fun to watch adults, of any age, become excited and discover something new. They are so keen to be ballet stars.

I've been feeling particularly drawn to classical ballet performances recently! The choreography, the music, the atmosphere, it’s all so magical! This week I am going to see the Bolshoi's “Giselle.”

But for all the glitz and glam of the professional world, my heart always beats fastest for the local ballet shows. Something about seeing your neighbours and friends express themselves on stage, it just warms my heart! I’ve been going to ballet performances since I was a kid, and it will always be a passion of mine. This week I’m planning to catch “The Sleeping Beauty” performed by my local amateur ballet company.

That's it for this week, lovelies! Join me next Tuesday for another trip through time. Remember to share your own #TutuTuesday moments and be sure to check back on my website, www.pink-tutu.com, for weekly style updates and special blog posts!

Until next time, stay radiant, and may your life be as twirling and joyful as a beautiful pink tutu! 🩰 💖
