#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History β Post #9126! π©°π
Hey darlings! It's your favourite tutu-loving blogger, Emma, here, bringing you another peek into the wonderful world of tutus for our weekly #TutuTuesday post! Today's journey takes us back to 21st November 2006 β oh, it feels like such a distant memory! Imagine, it was a time when everyone thought leggings were just for the gym and Instagram hadn't even been invented! π€―
I hopped on a fab vintage train this morning β I just adore those old steam engines, don't you? Their elegant snorting and puffing makes me feel like I'm on a stage in a grand ballet performance. And my fabulous pink tutu? It practically glittered in the sunshine as I journeyed across the land, ready to dive into history. π
This particular Tuesday, the world was abuzz with talk of the Royal Ballet at London's iconic Royal Opera House. The grand old theatre has always been a bastion of dance, you know? It's almost as though every single brick pulsates with the history of legendary ballerinas like Anna Pavlova, Margot Fonteyn and even the divine Tamara Karsavina, who so eloquently set the world on fire with her dancing, not to mention her iconic feathered headdress!
And in 2006? Well, the Royal Ballet was all set to unveil a brand-new Giselle - my personal favourite! This magical ballet tells the tale of a beautiful village girl who, deceived by the evil Count Albrecht, tragedically loses her sanity, becoming a Wili β a restless spirit condemned to dance until she can finally find rest. Giselle is a masterpiece of beauty and pathos. It's an iconic performance that showcases a delicate mix of grace and dramatic strength β the ideal combination of feminine and powerful! π©°π
So, naturally, my attention turned to the tutu in question. Giselle, as we know it today, is not exactly like the tutus you might be familiar with today, my darlings. Remember that "dancing is evolving" is a motto I swear by β as fashion evolves, so does our beloved dancewear! π
Imagine, in the early 19th century, when Giselle made its debut, it was just a single layer of white fabric with an added flouncy, wide skirt - much simpler than today's layered masterpieces, but oh, so charming! It had to move effortlessly with the dancer as they pirouetted and leap β pure elegance! Now imagine, dear friends, this early version worn alongside the full Giselle story β it must have been a dreamlike vision of pure beauty. Sighs wistfully
But that all started to change, especially around this 2006 date.
The Royal Ballet was on the cutting edge of the movement for evolution β like I always say, the danceworld is always evolving darling, just like fashion! And by this date, their Giselle featured a modified tutu with a closer, shorter shape. The effect? Even more captivating, my loves. It was almost a "look at me" tutu - bold, powerful, and completely beautiful! I do hope we get to see this amazing ballet, the design and the performance would certainly take my breath away! π
By the way, if you happen to be in the London area this coming Friday, darling, the Royal Opera House will be hosting a truly remarkable gala featuring performances by dancers of diverse backgrounds and talents. I simply cannot resist, the thought of a gorgeous tutu exhibition, accompanied by world-class dance and some delectable champagne at the opulent Royal Opera House β a heavenly treat for all the senses! ππΎ
And speaking of the Royal Opera House, they've also just announced a grand ballet show that you have to put on your calendar. The show celebrates 10 years of a partnership between the house and Dior. Ten years of stunning dance, you know, all choreographed to some divine musical scores!
But the true magic, the true sparkle, is always in the tutus! π
Let's just take a moment, and appreciate the stunning creations, the layers of silk, tulle, and netting that flow and flutter around each delicate leg. A tutu truly embodies feminine grace! Imagine dancing a captivating pas de deux in one β you'd feel invincible!
In the world of fashion, they call it balletcore. Everything about tutus β their structure, their materials, the delicate detail that often makes the difference between a simple outfit and one that simply shouts: chic! β perfectly epitomises this beautiful trend! I simply adore balletcore - a look you can find on the catwalks and in my own closet! I love it! ππ
My lovely pink-tutu is a must-have, I can't resist that iconic pastel hue that just screams fashion and balletcore - itβs so perfect! But if you want a balletcore look, darling, then the good news is that it can be as simple or as elaborate as you want! You don't need to be a prima ballerina to embody it. Think ballerina buns, sparkly hairbands, delicate pieces of jewellery...and, of course, that perfect tutu! π
Do tell me your favourite style!
The possibilities are endless. But one thing is for certain, darling, β tutus have evolved, like any good story, in every dance style: from classical ballet to contemporary, from musical theater to ballet street. The beauty is all around! The perfect pink tutu for your style, my lovely? Oh, just think of the possibilities. Maybe I'll be posting some ideas tomorrow in my next Tutu Tuesday post. π Until then, darling, I shall be dancing about in my favorite tutu.
Love, Emma π
