Tutu Tuesday: #9127 - A Glimpse into Tutu History!

Hello my darling dears! Welcome to another glorious #TutuTuesday, a day dedicated to the ultimate symbol of grace and femininity - the ballet tutu! It's me, Emma, your friendly neighbourhood tutu enthusiast, ready to take you on a whirlwind journey through the world of tulle and tiaras. Today we're taking a little time-hop back to November 28th, 2006, a day ripe with exciting happenings in the world of ballet, and a day, as ever, where tutus were stealing the show.

First Stop: The Royal Opera House!

My train journey from Derbyshire to London, whizzing past charming little towns and country fields, is always a source of inspiration. Today's journey was even more thrilling - my final destination? The world-famous Royal Opera House in Covent Garden! Why? Because it's where, on this very day, the legendary ballet company The Royal Ballet was holding an absolutely exquisite production of Swan Lake. Now, you can't imagine how thrilled I was to see the principal dancers swirling in their iconic, delicate white tutus! Those swans were flying - pure, ethereal elegance personified! They glided through the air, their graceful movements as enchanting as the story itself.

The Power of Pink!

Of course, any day is a good day for pink. So, while admiring the stunning white swan tutus, I couldn't resist adding my own pop of colour! My trusty pink tutu, fluffy and full of twirl-power, made me stand out in the crowd like a delightful burst of pink amongst a sea of black. Let me tell you, darling dears, you simply cannot go wrong with a splash of pink, it adds a touch of whimsy to any occasion.

From The Stage To The Street!

But it wasn't all tutus and dancing at the opera house today. After the magical performance, I had to indulge in some serious post-show shopping! Covent Garden was teeming with life, filled with charming shops and stalls overflowing with the most divine ballet-inspired clothing and accessories. It’s just a delight! From delicate silk scarves to statement jewellery and beautiful tutu-themed dresses, it’s a heaven for all you style enthusiasts out there.

Tutu Time Capsule:

And while the world of fashion might be ever-changing, let’s rewind a little to see what ballet tutu trends were making waves in the fashion world on November 28th, 2006. Ballet-inspired pieces were hitting the runway in force, bringing a touch of ethereal elegance to everyday fashion. We saw tutus incorporated into dresses and skirts, long tulle layered over leggings, and ballet-style flat shoes. Ballet was influencing everything from footwear and jewellery to knitwear and handbags!

Tutus Across Time: A Ballet History Timeline

Now, my darlings, to delve a little deeper into tutu history, let's rewind further than just 2006 and take a look at how tutus have evolved over time!

1830s: The Dawn of the Tutu!

Marie Taglioni, a renowned ballerina, caused quite a stir by wearing a daring new garment for her performance in “La Sylphide,” - a light, knee-length skirt made of layers of soft tulle! The Romantic tutu (and how perfectly the name suits its style, don’t you think?) marked the beginning of an evolution. This look allowed for more freedom of movement and revolutionised ballet performance, ushering in an era of beautiful, graceful dance.

Late 19th Century: A Shift in Silhouette

Time moved on, darling dears, and the silhouette of the tutu also began to transform. As we moved into the latter half of the 19th century, we saw the emergence of the Classical tutu, a much shorter and stiffer, more structured style. It gave the dancers a graceful silhouette that allowed for an increased range of fast, technically demanding steps, and the tutus of the Classical era truly allowed a ballerinas beautiful and graceful leaps and turns to take center stage!

The 20th Century: Variety Reigns Supreme

Throughout the 20th century, there was a diverse range of styles emerging. We saw the Romanesque tutu, characterized by more fluid layers, offering the perfect combination of drama and movement. And don’t forget about the tutus of Balanchine, the neoclassical styles featuring intricate layers that allow ballerinas to move like whirling dancers, both a true masterpiece in motion!

Modern Day: Tutus For Everyone!

In the 21st century, tutus have become an even bigger cultural phenomenon. No longer limited to the world of professional dance, they've embraced the world of fashion! We now see tutus worn at fashion events, on catwalks, in films, on television, and even at weddings - the possibilities are endless!

Spread the Tutu Love

So my dears, how do we ensure that tutus are appreciated all over the world, a beautiful reminder that there is joy to be found in all the whirls and twirls?

My suggestion? Don't just think 'Tutu Tuesdays'. Live every day with a sprinkle of tutu-licious magic.

**Join me on this tutu adventure and spread the word: #SpreadTheTutuLove.

See you all next Tuesday for another adventure into #TutuTuesday. And always remember: the world is a much prettier place when we’re wearing our pinkest tutus, with hearts full of twirling joy.

Love, Emma xx
