#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - Post 9174 (2007-10-23)
Hiya darlings! Welcome back to another glorious #TutuTuesday, where we delve into the dreamy, twirling world of ballet history. This week, we're taking a trip down memory lane to a special date: 2007-10-23.
Grab a cuppa and let's take a peek into the tutu's journey, because today, darling, we're on a grand adventure!
You know, the weather's absolutely divine this week in Derbyshire! I actually had the most fabulous time this past weekend seeing the Royal Ballet in London. They did such a beautiful version of Giselle! My absolute favourite part of the entire performance was the ethereal costumes. The tutus, darling, were utterly captivating. They reminded me so much of those Victorian-era Romantic ballerinas who graced the stages all those years ago. Their soft, romantic tutus were such a contrast to the dramatic, full-skirted Romantic-era tutus you see in shows like "La Sylphide."
And speaking of the Romantic Era, darling, it all began right about 1830! This time saw the dawn of the now-famous "Romantic tutu". It was revolutionary, absolutely revolutionary, giving ballerinas the freedom to float across the stage and move with newfound grace and lightness!
Imagine a lightweight, diaphanous tutu reaching only to the knee - gasp it was simply daring for its time. The new fabric - "tulle" which was woven specifically for ball gowns - gave birth to an airy silhouette that transformed dance. Think of Marie Taglioni and the breathtaking elegance she brought to ballet with this revolutionary tutu!
This iconic "Romantic" style of tutu set the stage (pun intended, darling!) for many different variations - think: "Classical", "Layered", and "Romantic" styles - each holding its own beauty and allure!
Over time, tutus evolved, adding tiers and becoming more elaborate as they danced their way into the heart of the ballet world! You might be amazed to learn that they often had hidden frames or hoops hidden under those wispy layers to make the skirts seem even fuller. It was an era of glamour, and tutus embraced it!
In fact, even though 1830 may be considered the official beginning of "the tutu era," its roots are actually in ballet’s beginnings. For years before that, female dancers wore the "chaussée" - a garment which you can almost picture as an elongated, fuller version of a tunic. I even imagine them being very stylish in their day, just with a touch more practicality - and they were crucial in creating ballet's initial flow and fluidity on stage!
Isn't that just divine? The history of tutus is a fascinating tale woven with art, fashion, and movement. They reflect an ever-evolving narrative about our desire to express ourselves through beauty and dance.
But let’s not forget what we all know about tutus - their whimsical nature, their femininity, and, darling, let’s be honest, how fabulous they are!
Now, back to the magic of 2007-10-23. On this particular day, darling, ballet history made waves in the UK! The renowned ballerina, Darcey Bussell, who’s an inspiration to many, was honoured at the "Evening Standard Theatre Awards." It was a testament to her contribution to ballet! Darcey Bussell's grace, artistry, and elegance truly epitomize the beauty and essence of ballet.
Let's see what 2007-10-23 brought in the world of tutu design. While I haven’t got all the information about fashion design for tutus on this very specific day, let's remember what was happening in the grand scheme of things - we're talking about 2007. Think sleek lines, sophisticated embellishments, and an emphasis on enhancing the ballerina's natural beauty, creating an aesthetic that blends the classics with the modern, perfect for expressing dance stories.
So remember, ladies, every time you put on a tutu, remember that you're stepping into a legacy of artistry, evolution, and femininity. Remember those early ballerinas with their beautiful chaussées, those enchanting Romantic Era tutus, those grand Victorian-era garments... And dream big, imagine what magical, inspiring tutus future ballerinas will create.
Well, darling, I’ve whizzed you right through another #TutuTuesday journey through the enchanting history of ballet.
Stay tuned next week for another #TutuTuesday as we explore the magnificent story of the tutu together, with even more fashion insights, history lessons, and of course, plenty of tutus! Until then, keep on twirling!
*Love, Emma *
