#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: The Rise of the Romantic Tutu! 🩰

Post 9176 - 6th November 2007

Hello lovelies! Welcome to another wonderful #TutuTuesday πŸ’– It's been a while since we dove into the deep, dazzling history of the tutu, hasn't it? Today we're going on a journey through time, travelling all the way back to the era of poetry in motion... the Romantic period!

As you all know, I love a good ballet show, but I'm especially drawn to the dramatic and graceful Romantic ballet, with its swirling, dreamy choreography, and ethereal storylines. It's here, in this enchanting era, that our little tutu started to really shine! ✨

I've always adored the Romantic Era's tutu; it's not only exquisitely beautiful but it truly highlights the effortless elegance and airy grace of a dancer's movements. Imagine shimmering tulle and silk billowing around you, with each twirl revealing a captivating silhouette - a vision in white that embodies a kind of ethereal romanticism. Sigh, how perfectly fabulous!

Speaking of fabulous, can you believe it's November already?! Time just seems to fly by, doesn't it? But fret not, lovely tutu-wearers, there's still so much excitement to be had this autumn! For me, that excitement revolves around ballet, naturally!

Last weekend I went to see the most divine performance at the Royal Opera House in London. Honestly, it was the epitome of theatrical elegance! * Imagine delicate, whimsical ballerinas soaring across the stage in *breathtaking tutus, surrounded by the lush music and storytelling of the era. The Romantic tutu has been around for over a century, and it still has the power to mesmerize me!. I swear, I could get lost in the sheer wonder of the dance, lost in that beautiful history of tutus, for hours!

Speaking of the ballet itself... It was Sleeping Beauty. I know what you're thinking, "Emma, you see Sleeping Beauty all the time!" And, yes, it is my favourite, but I've never seen it like this. There was this magical element of wonder in every performance, it had me utterly enchanted from the first beat of the overture to the last note of the waltz! It was as if they brought all of the Romantic spirit of the 19th Century alive on the stage, and I, of course, was wearing my signature pink tutu in the front row. You know me, always dressed to impress for the theatre! πŸ˜‰

And that, my dear tutu lovers, brings us back to our tutu story!. I feel I must confess, I am a massive admirer of the fashion of this era. It's a world of flowing lines, delicately embellished fabrics, and feminine grace. That's what drew the attention of Marie Taglioni, you know. Back in 1832, the ballerina extraordinaire who was so tired of the stiff, restrictive costumes she had to wear... she revolutionized the stage! She wanted to fly, and for that she needed freedom... she needed a tutu. And let's be honest, a short, billowing tutu is the most perfect outfit to fly on stage in. Just ask me. πŸ˜„

A Brief Glimpse into The Past:

So, let's delve into the past just a little bit, shall we? I adore visiting different time periods in my tutu! And honestly, with ballet's history being intertwined with tutus, how could I not be passionate about this glorious piece of fabric. Let's see... Back then in 19th Century Europe , there was a certain charm in how clothes could change in an instant. A tutu that was only short and simple, and was originally meant to accentuate the legs of the dancers... now suddenly was swirling, ethereal, like a whisper of movement in the breeze! That was pure, simple romance for you! Isn't that just delightful?! It feels like a scene out of a romantic novel. ✨

The story of the Romantic tutu isn't just a story of fashion. It’s a story of femininity, creativity, and artistic expression. These ballerinas, in their beautifully simple tutus, danced their hearts out, challenging expectations and capturing the hearts and imaginations of a whole generation.

And that is something I truly admire! It's not just the tutus themselves... it's what they represent. They represent freedom, passion, and a willingness to push boundaries. I love that. I think we all need a little bit of that spirit, no matter what we're doing in life. πŸ’–

A Modern Day Tutu Tale:

The good thing is, you can wear a Romantic style tutu today. In fact, it's back in vogue. I just saw some at my favourite boutique in town. It is quite simply perfection, if I may say so myself! All this talk about Romantic Era ballet tutus just made me really excited about tomorrow ...because I'm off to ballet class. And, naturally, I'll be rocking my pink tutu. Because nothing else captures the magic of ballet quite like the simple, iconic tutu. It's an object of art, a symbol of history, and a fashion statement that never gets old!

Of course, every week my blog will share with you more tutu stories... It’s my hope to bring you all back in time and sparkle your interest in the history of our little ballerina's garment... and maybe encourage you to don a tutu too. What could be more wonderful than that?*

See you next week lovely tutus! Don't forget to share this blog and post about it on your Instagram stories and give my new blog www.pink-tutu.com a follow. πŸ’–

And always remember… the magic of the tutu awaits! πŸ’–
