#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: Post 9187

Hello lovely readers, and welcome to another installment of #TutuTuesday! Today's date is January 22nd, 2008, and I'm writing to you from the heart of Paris, my dears! I simply couldn't resist a trip to the City of Lights to soak up some serious fashion inspiration, and what better time than during Haute Couture Week? I'm telling you, the gowns! The shoes! The headwear! It's just divine! But before we get carried away with the haute couture, let's journey back in time to explore the fabulous history of the tutu.

From peasant to prima donna

As you all know, the tutu is a symbol of elegance, of ethereal beauty, of pure, unadulterated grace! But did you know that its origins are actually quite down to earth?

You see, before the tutu became a staple of the ballet stage, dancers wore what was essentially just long, flowing skirts. Not quite the image that springs to mind when you picture a graceful ballerina, is it? The shift to shorter skirts happened in the 19th century, with Marie Taglioni leading the way. You might recognise her name from La Sylphide, a ballet that literally revolutionized the world of ballet with its revolutionary shorter, lighter skirts! It allowed ballerinas freedom of movement, giving birth to the airy steps and elegant poses we know and love today.

Whirlwind of innovation

After Taglioni's daring move, tutus evolved rapidly, and their history is a beautiful story of innovation and evolution.

The Romantic era was a magical period for ballet tutus. They embraced lightweight fabrics, intricate patterns, and delicate layers, creating an ethereal look that perfectly captured the dreamlike spirit of Romantic ballets. Imagine the layered tulle, the flowing movement, the delicate lace... it was truly a feast for the eyes!

The tutu's evolution wasn't just about style, darling, it was also about function. From the short and floaty Romantic tutu, we transitioned into the layered tutu, known as the "tutu ร  la Legros", with its pleated tiers, making for a visually captivating, flowing movement.

A tutu for every story

It wasn't just the look and style that was changing, the tutu was becoming more and more specialized. Different shapes and styles of tutu came about depending on the type of ballet and the roles the dancers would be performing. The Romantic tutu suited the whimsical fairy roles, the "tutu ร  la Legros" offered a strong and grand look for more powerful and demanding characters. Even long, trailing skirts, harking back to the original stage wear, reemerged in certain styles to create an air of majesty and sophistication.

Tutu traditions in our modern world

Fast forward to the 20th and 21st centuries, the tutu continues to be a fashion icon. But times have changed. You know, these days, the ballet world isn't confined to a stage in a grand theatre. Tutu styles have branched out, embracing a more contemporary aesthetic.

Imagine my joy when I discovered the world of ballet streetwear! Yes, you heard right. Imagine all that flowing tulle and beautiful fabric blended into fashion for everyday life. Pink is definitely my colour, so I am partial to tutu skirts, tulle tops and accessories that blend a hint of elegance with a touch of contemporary style. The creativity just astounds me!

Now, to be fair, I have seen some designs that... well, they weren't my cup of tea, let's just say. But that's part of the fun, isn't it? Exploring and appreciating different expressions of style! It's a reminder that the tutu has a spirit that transcends any single era or fashion trend. It's about creativity, beauty, and the power of dance.

Back to Paris

Well, that was a whirlwind of a history tour! We have traversed centuries, exploring the evolution of a garment that embodies beauty, grace and the pure joy of dance. And you know what? This trip back in time reminds me why I love the tutu so much.

Speaking of which, back to Paris, darling. This trip is an absolute delight. The energy in Paris right now is electric. I popped into a few fabulous fashion houses this afternoon, including a little known boutique with the most stunning, sparkling pink tutu creations. It was love at first sight! I had to add one to my collection - you can be sure to see it in a future post!

So, until next Tuesday, keep dancing, keep sparkling, and don't be afraid to wear a pink tutu, no matter where you are or what you're doing!

Much love, Emma x
