#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Time - Ballet Tutu History - Post 9188

Hello my darling dears! It's your favourite pink-tutu-clad time traveller Emma here, back from another whirlwind trip through the annals of dance history!

Today's journey took me to the 29th of January, 2008. This time, I wasn't in some grand palace or dazzling opera house – I was on a train, yes you heard me right, a train! It's the only way to really experience the bustling energy of this time. London, it turns out, was in a flurry of activity as I made my way to the iconic Royal Opera House. It was the perfect setting to investigate the evolution of the tutu, which of course is the central focus of my time-travelling escapades.

I'm in full tutu regalia, as always – a delightful, pink confection, perfectly fluffy and utterly glamorous. The fabric rustles charmingly as I stride onto the bustling platform.

Now, back in 2008, tutus were definitely having their moment! There was a sense of revival for this dancewear classic. You see, the early 20th century saw a transition towards the "Romantic tutu" – that billowing, ethereal masterpiece you'll often see in ballets like Giselle. This romantic style was really captivating audiences!

But, as history often likes to play tricks, the '50s and '60s brought a bit of a tutu revolution!

Imagine the dramatic flair: Short, tight tutus became the norm – think The Firebird – this style had an incredible, impactful stage presence and brought with it a new sense of boldness to ballet. And this trend was alive and well in 2008! It's truly inspiring, and the beauty is in its versatility!

Speaking of inspiring, this time travel adventure has also been incredibly fruitful for my vintage tutu collection. I unearthed the most exquisite pieces from a charming little boutique in Notting Hill. Just imagine a delicate, hand-beaded, baby pink creation from the 1920s – perfect for a grand soirée! Oh, and I can't forget a darling mid-century number that was positively dripping in diamantés! Absolutely dreamy.

Oh, and speaking of diamantés, my darling readers, today marks the opening night of the Royal Ballet's The Sleeping Beauty in 2008! It's a truly breathtaking production, and my goodness, the tutus were absolutely to-die-for. That exquisite white Romantic tutu for Princess Aurora – the perfect vision of delicate grace – just had to be admired! The colour, the design, the shape – oh, so lovely! It's a reminder of why I love exploring the ballet world through the history of the tutu, it's about so much more than just the fabric – it's about the evolution of artistic expression.

Speaking of expression, I must share my outfit for tonight's ballet! A flowing, lilac tutu with hints of pearl embroidery. A perfectly charming look for enjoying the beautiful storytelling and dance that only the Royal Ballet can offer.

Before I close, my darling dears, I want to challenge all of you! We've all experienced a ballet or dance show, haven't we? That breathtaking story, the soaring melodies, the magical performances. It's magic on stage! Why not step outside the confines of a stage and add some ballet into your daily routine?

Pop on your favourite tutu – even if it's a simple one. Do a little twirl in the park, have fun! Embrace your inner ballerina – remember it's all about the joy and the playful energy of movement!

And finally, remember my dearest dears: tutus are always a good idea. They’re simply bursting with femininity, style, and magic!

Join me next Tuesday for another #TutuTuesday journey through the exciting world of dance history. And until then, wear pink, twirl with passion, and remember that every day can be a Tutu Tuesday!

See you soon!

Your time-traveling ballerina, Emma
