TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Ballet History - #9193
Hello my darling tutu lovers! Emma here, back from a whirlwind trip to, oh, I can't tell you where, because if I did, you'd all be wanting to join me! But let me just say, the train journey was exquisite! (And wouldn't you know it, I wore a fabulous new pink tutu on the way there...you know how much I adore a splash of pink! 😉) Speaking of tutus, this Tuesday, let's journey back to March 4th, 2008, and take a peek into the glamorous history of the ballerina's most iconic attire!
2008: A Year of Tutus
This particular day in 2008 wasn't particularly marked by a groundbreaking tutu moment. It was simply another glorious day to celebrate this iconic garment, wouldn't you agree? I mean, what's not to love about tutus? They're like edible candy floss! Light and airy, fluttering around us, full of colour and grace, embodying the essence of dance.
Just imagine yourself standing centre stage in a dazzling white tutu, shimmering under the spotlight, your every movement accentuated by the flowing fabric, the music swelling around you... oh, the thrill! It's what every little girl dreams of, isn't it? And frankly, so does every grown-up who enjoys a good twirl.
A Glimpse Back Through Time
Tutus have always been captivating. While you may not be able to waltz back in time like me, our dear, fabulous tutus can carry us through centuries! Back in the 16th century, dancers wore what looked like long skirts! Yes, they were far from the streamlined beauties we have today. Over time, those skirts got progressively shorter, getting lighter and easier to move in.
Enter the 18th century, and our beloved "Romantic tutu" was born! Imagine: billowing layers of silk, reaching just below the knee, romantic, airy, perfect for showcasing ethereal pirouettes and delicate movements. This style remained popular for a while, but eventually, a change was in the air…
In the late 19th century, our favourite tutu got an upgrade with the "Classical tutu"! This style had a bodice and a much shorter, wider skirt, often featuring beautiful, intricate details and a dazzling palette of colours! Talk about elegant!
And then came the "Tutu Moderne", bringing the evolution full circle! Think a minimalist, lean, sharp line for contemporary dance, embracing both grace and power, often accompanied by strong, dramatic lighting that emphasized every delicate nuance of movement.
But Tutus Are So Much More Than Just a Dance Outfit
My love for tutus transcends dance and ballet. In fact, I firmly believe that every girl (and every boy, too!), should embrace the tutus. This exquisite attire isn’t confined to the dance stage; It can be worn every day, celebrating confidence, style, and a love for life's little thrills! I see women wearing beautiful tutu skirts on the streets! Why not? Let's take the tutu from the stage to the streets! I’m absolutely positive about this, as a dedicated wearer of the tutu. It's something every single one of us can appreciate!
Back to 2008, and what was happening on this glorious day
March 4th, 2008! While tutus remained the center of my world, I wasn’t the only one paying attention. In New York City, they had the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre doing its thing at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Imagine those graceful dancers gliding in stunning tutus!
Then, across the pond, we had The Royal Ballet in London. Always a captivating treat. You know they're sure to have showcased tutus with grace and style. Just picturing it makes my tutu heart flutter!
Oh, and a delightful piece of trivia for my darling Tutu lovers: March 4th, 2008, happened to fall on a Tuesday. Just like today! I feel like there’s a special meaning in this!
So, there you have it. I hope you enjoyed our little journey through time and the wonderful history of tutus! Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to explore another magnificent corner of this magical world. Don't forget, it’s never too late to embrace the enchantment of the tutu. You never know, you might just find yourself waltzing right into a life of utter loveliness. Happy twirling!
Until next week,
Emma.
