Tutu Tuesday #9204: The Story Behind the Spin! (May 20, 2008)

Hello my darling tutu-lovers! It's your favourite pink-obsessed time-travelling ballerina, Emma, back with another whirlwind trip through the magical world of the tutu! Today's adventure takes us all the way back to 2008, a year brimming with fabulous fashion and stunning ballets.

Remember, it's Tutu Tuesday at www.pink-tutu.com, so grab your favourite frothy tulle frock and join me for a spin down memory lane, darlings!

From Roman Days to Royal Stages:

You know I adore a good bit of historical research, don't you? And there's no shortage of fascinating tutu tales! Now, you're thinking tutus are strictly 20th-century, aren't you? Think again, lovelies! We can trace their ancestors back to Roman days. Remember those voluminous flowing togas worn by Greek and Roman dancers? They're actually early forerunners of our favourite poufy delights!

But fast forward a few centuries, and we arrive in the 1500s. Fancy dress was in vogue (the Queen was a big fan!), and those early tutus were mostly long and full, perfect for swirling about and creating that majestic, fairy tale image. But they weren't always so easy to wear! They were typically made of materials like velvet, wool, and silk, and the hoops and structures required to create their shape made them rather bulky and cumbersome. Imagine trying to do a pirouette in a giant skirt, darling!

The Ballerina's Dream: Enter the Tutu!

Now, let's jump to the late 1800s. The invention of the "tulle" material (made from fine net or mesh) completely revolutionized the ballerina's world. Think about it: lightweight, flowing, easy to spin in, and creating breathtaking silhouettes. The perfect vehicle for ballerinas to express themselves!

Remember Marie Taglioni, the legendary dancer who captivated audiences with her graceful leaps and effortless moves? She became the first ballerina to don the short, fluffy tutu we associate with classical ballet, and boy did it create a sensation! It was so unlike anything seen before - liberating, graceful, and downright iconic. Talk about a trendsetter!

The Victorian era brought about a fascination with elegance and refinement, and what better way to showcase that than through the ballet? With the birth of "classical ballet," the tutu became its symbol, a breathtaking fusion of beauty and athleticism. The romanticism of the tutu - its delicate ethereal quality, it's almost ethereal otherworldly vibe - it truly captured the heart of the Victorian public.

My Inspiration in 2008:

In the grand scheme of things, 2008 wasn't technically a groundbreaking year for tutus - but it was definitely a stellar year for ballet! You know I'm obsessed with anything fashion, especially if it's combined with the elegant world of ballet, and boy, did 2008 deliver! I was living in Derbyshire then, and I managed to score a ticket for a Royal Ballet performance in Covent Garden! I mean, come on! That's pretty epic! Imagine being in London, seeing one of the most celebrated ballet companies in the world! I spent weeks planning my outfit, naturally: a gorgeous bubblegum pink tulle tutu, with a sparkly black top and high-heeled sparkly ballet shoes, my hair cascading in bouncy waves - absolutely fabulous!

It's all about the sparkle and magic, lovelies! That performance, with those extraordinary ballerinas dancing effortlessly in their dreamy tutus - the air just felt magical! The whole theatre was awash with twinkling lights, soft music, and just an intoxicating feeling of grace and joy. Ballet is simply captivating, don't you agree?

My Top Tutu Trends:

This week, I'm obsessing over two tutus that captured hearts around the globe in 2008! Remember “The Sleeping Beauty” by The Royal Ballet? The gorgeous ballerina Darcey Bussell totally stole the show, particularly when she glided across the stage wearing that exquisite powder blue tutu. Such romantic, timeless elegance! And remember the “Giselle” revival? Those romantic tutus became a huge hit - light and breezy, capturing the enchanting nature of the ballet itself.

I'm planning to try out both of these styles next week! Can't wait to create my own versions with some fabulous pink tulle and a touch of shimmering embellishment.

Making Every Day Tutu Tuesday:

My darling readers, it's not just about wearing tutus to the ballet, lovelies. You know I love spreading the love of the tutu far and wide! Imagine heading down to the local park, catching up with friends, or enjoying a day of shopping - all while twirling gracefully in your own signature tutu! That's my mission: to bring the magic of the tutu to the everyday!

It's about embracing that inner princess, expressing yourself creatively, and simply enjoying life to the fullest! Why wait for a special occasion, when you can embrace your inner tutu-wearing diva every day of the week?!

And lastly, darlings...

As I whizz back through time, I have one very important question: are you wearing your pink tutu this Tuesday? It's the perfect outfit to make your day brighter, more magical, and just a whole lot more fabulous!

Remember: every day can be Tutu Tuesday! Keep your tutus ready, my dears! We'll be back next week with more thrilling tales and fabulous tutu fashion!

Sending you lots of love and tutu hugs,

Emma
