Tutu Tuesday: A Journey Through Time... to 2009!

Welcome, lovelies! It's your girl Emma, back again for another #TutuTuesday, and boy, oh boy, are we taking a trip today! We're jet-setting – well, more like train-setting – back to the oh-so-fabulous year 2009! I know, right?! Talk about a blast from the past. Now, I might not have the biggest vintage collection of tutus (though my secret eBay shopping sprees say otherwise!), but I'm absolutely buzzing to share some insights from that amazing decade.

This week's blog post is number 9273 for my Ballet Tutu History blog, and I just had to time-travel back to see what was going on in the world of dance and, most importantly, tutus! It's amazing how the styles have changed! And let's be honest, they’ve only gotten more glamorous. Just look at that magnificent feather trim...

Anyway, back to 2009! Now, as any proper Tutu-ologist will tell you, the year 2009 was all about... revival! Ballet was experiencing a surge in popularity – everyone was going to see Swan Lake, there was even that viral video of a ballerina falling down, which was, like, hilarious. But really, the big deal was that a lot of companies were focusing on old classics with fresh interpretations. It was a gloriously nostalgic time!

I can practically hear you squealing: "But what about the tutus?! TELL US ABOUT THE TUTUS!" I get you, darling! This is the real magic, isn’t it? Imagine the sheer romance, the beautiful fabric, the airy layers! 2009, my dears, was the dawn of a truly wonderful tutu revolution – think dramatic tiers, sumptuous satins, and some serious beading. We're talking haute couture on the ballet stage! It was pure ballet-fied elegance.

And on September 15th? Well, that just happened to be the night of the Royal Ballet's Romeo and Juliet performance at the Royal Opera House! Talk about an amazing spectacle, I just had to take a peek! It must have been a magical evening for everyone lucky enough to be there. If you’re anything like me, then seeing Romeo and Juliet on stage will have you completely swept away in the story! Just thinking about it is sending me into a daydream of perfectly-timed pirouettes and breathtaking pas de deux!

Honestly, I'd probably be too busy swooning over the stunning, billowing tutus to actually follow the story! Seriously, the tutus must have been so divine - long, layered, and overflowing with sparkling gems. If you ever get the chance, you have to catch the Royal Ballet in London. It's a must-do for any tutu-loving lass. It’s just one of those places that takes my breath away! Oh, I simply can’t wait for my next trip back!

And speaking of breathtaking tutus, I must show you my new favourite discovery. Found it just the other day at the cutest vintage shop in Notting Hill (the train ride was divine, of course, all my little tutus made it on perfectly!). Imagine, this piece of vintage ballet magic – think flowing chiffon, an absolutely heavenly shade of powder blue, and a bit of delicate hand-sewn beading! It’s just perfect!

My favourite tutu, the one I never wear because it is simply too fabulous, just won’t come out of its protective display box… the perfect blend of traditional and modern, just like the 2009 scene in the world of ballet. Imagine it! Imagine the beauty of the tutus in that year’s Royal Opera House! Oh, what would I give to take one step back in time? But enough of my little daydream...

Here's to tutus, my darling readers. Let's make the world a more pink, frilly, twirling place, one tutu at a time! Until next week, happy twirling!
