#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - Post #9286 (15th December 2009)
Hello my darlings! It's Emma here, your resident pink tutu aficionado, ready to whisk you away on another whirlwind journey through time, all thanks to the magic of the ballet tutu! Today's journey takes us to... drumroll, please... 15th December 2009!
Oh, what a time it was! The world was just starting to recover from the economic downturn of 2008, but thankfully, our love of ballet never faltered! And what was a ballerina to do on such a glamorous day in December? Why, nothing less than immerse myself in a glorious performance at the legendary Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, of course!
It was like stepping into a fairytale! Imagine, my darlings, the Bolshoi. The opulent velvet seats, the gold-leafed detailing, the sense of history in every creak of the theatre. It made me want to twirl around with sheer joy! And oh, the performance! A masterful interpretation of "Giselle" with breathtaking choreography and stunning costumes. I was particularly enamoured with the shimmering silver and black tutus the corps de ballet wore โ so elegant and flowing, like the whisper of a snowy evening!
Tutu Travels & Adventures
But before I tell you more about the performance, let's talk about my fabulous trip to Russia. It was truly a delightful adventure! I travelled to Moscow via the Tran-Siberian Railway. Can you imagine, a whole journey by train! So charming. I was surrounded by incredible scenery โ snow-capped mountains, vast plains, glittering lakes โ each one a tableau fit for a ballet performance!
Speaking of travel, have you ever wondered about the origins of the ballet tutu? It wasn't always a wispy, weightless symbol of grace and femininity! Back in the 16th century, ladies wore floor-length dresses โ so practical but, well, hardly the epitome of airy grace!
But in the 19th century, when ballet was in its golden age, designers realised that by shortening the skirt and emphasising the lines of the body, they could create a new visual vocabulary that showcased the fluidity and grace of movement.
This sparked a revolution in women's attire. And let's not forget the pink element โ those soft, romantic shades really elevated the ballet to an art form. Who would ever have imagined a performance of "Swan Lake" with a red tutu, wouldn't you agree?
Tutus, Trends, and Thoughts
After all, a good tutu can make you feel like a princess, no matter how many times you trip on your own shoe! (Ask me how I know).
Just remember my dears, tutus are like an invitation to embrace our inner whimsicality! There are so many styles and colours out there: romantic pastel pink, classic black and white, playful polka dots โ the possibilities are truly endless!
Speaking of trends, 2009 saw a huge surge in popularity of the short, ruffled, poufy tutu style, perfectly mirroring the Victorian and Edwardian eras when such styles dominated. A real nod to the glorious history of dance! And what was I wearing? Why, a gorgeous vintage-style pink tutu with shimmering sequin detailing! You know I had to get that picture for Instagramโฆ or rather, "Pinteresting", as it was called then.
More to Discover
I simply adore delving into the rich history of dance. To think that those delicate tutus are not just garments, but powerful expressions of art and storytelling!
And who knows what magical adventures the future holds for tutus? We might be seeing new innovations and collaborations, dazzling reinterpretations of classics, and maybe, just maybe, a day where every single person walks the streets wearing a pink tutu! Now that would be a glorious sight to see!
I'm off now to scout out some exciting new vintage tutu finds, but I'll be back next Tuesday with a new installment of our ballet tutu adventure. Until then, keep dancing and don't be afraid to embrace your inner ballerina, my darlings!
Stay tuned, Emma
