Tutu Tuesday #9429: The Evolution of the Tutu: From 1830s to the Modern Era

Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your resident tutu enthusiast, ready to take you on another fabulous journey through the captivating history of the tutu!

This week, we're whisking back to the captivating world of 19th-century ballet, where tutus took their very first pirouette on the stage! As you all know, I'm a big fan of a train journey, and today I've just hopped off the Orient Express, fresh from a delightful performance in St. Petersburg. This grand city was practically buzzing with tutus back in the day, and you just wouldn't believe how much inspiration I've gathered for this week's #TutuTuesday post!

But before we dive into the past, I simply have to mention that this 11th of September marks the 3rd anniversary of The Royal Ballet's beautiful production of 'The Sleeping Beauty'! A ballet so timeless and full of enchantment, it's one that I would never tire of watching. That stunning white tutus...just dreamy!

Now, let's journey back in time and discover how the tutu became the iconic symbol of ballet we all adore!

From Crinolines to Classical Twirls

In the 1830s, tutus were all about flowing, layered fabric! You'll find these beauties adorned with the big, bouncy skirts typical of the time, known as crinolines. It wasn't until the early 1840s that the tutus we know and love today started taking centre stage!

Imagine for a moment: The great Marie Taglioni, a ballerina so incredibly talented she practically defined the role of a dancer. Now imagine her leaping across the stage in a costume that actually allowed her to move! Talk about a revolutionary moment!

With the invention of the "tutu romantique" - which translates to 'romantic tutu' in English - we started seeing ballet in a whole new light! The layers of tulle and shorter length provided both freedom and elegance, which allowed for a truly beautiful and flowing expression of dance. Just imagine, ladies! This was a huge change for ballerinas who had to be cautious about the weight of their dresses and fabric before.

But the story of the tutu isn't just about change, it's also about evolution. The 'tutu romantique' laid the groundwork for what we know as the classical tutu which, for me, embodies pure ballerina grace! These beauties became known for their tight, structured bodices and layered tulle skirt, designed to show off every delicate movement with maximum fluidity and grace.

Over the next few decades, the tutu continued its elegant evolution, transitioning through different stages. One moment we see them cascading to the floor with elegant folds, while the next we see them adorning ballerinas as they soar through the air in delicate swirls! I think, though, it's fair to say that each change has made the tutu even more enchanting!

From The Ballet to the Runway

We've already touched upon this wonderful evolution, and what we see today with the use of the tutu in the modern era is even more incredible!

Don't think the tutu just stays within the realm of the ballet stage! These stunning pieces have worked their way onto the runway, influencing fashion trends and becoming a timeless symbol of femininity and grace!

But my friends, here’s where the magic really kicks in – fashion houses have given the tutu their own twist, embracing the iconic piece as inspiration for everything from dramatic cocktail dresses to chic street wear! That’s right! You can rock the tutu anywhere, on any occasion, because you are the star! Just make sure to go pink, of course! It's not hard to fall in love with a garment that embodies elegance, movement and sheer joy, don't you think?

The Tutu – a symbol of female power

Let’s be honest, folks, the tutu is not just a garment – it’s a symbol. It symbolizes passion, grace, artistry, and sheer, undiluted power! You don't need to be a ballerina to wear a tutu and feel confident, it is a reminder of the limitless power and strength within every woman. I find tutus empower women to step outside their comfort zones, to explore new levels of movement and confidence. And honestly, there is absolutely no feeling quite like feeling empowered!

So, as we reach the end of another exciting journey through tutu history, let’s raise a glass (or a teacup, as I prefer!) to this fabulous garment! Its elegance, its dynamism, its capacity to inspire and empower – the tutu has earned its rightful place as a timeless fashion icon.

Don't forget, darlings, it's a tutu kind of world, so wear your tutu with pride, twirl with your hearts full of joy, and remember that in every step you take, you write your own enchanting story! Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a little tutu shopping to do!

Love, Emma
