Tutu Tuesday: #9431 The Story of the Tutu! (September 25th 2012)
Hiya my darlings! Welcome back to another week of tutu-tastic history! Today's post is all about those lovely frothy wonders - the humble tutu! 🩰
I just can't help but feel giddy when I put on my pink one - it's just so twirly, so fabulous! I can almost hear the music start when I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror! It makes me want to rush to a ballet class and do a graceful pirouette or even better, jump on a train and head to the Royal Opera House for a stunning performance! Oh my! 🚄✨
As a Derbyshire girl with a passion for all things pink and twirly, it seems I’ve spent my entire life swirling around in these beauties! But I wanted to delve deeper, into the glorious history of the tutu! Did you know, my lovelies, that tutus actually had a different look in the past?! The original ones, designed by Marius Petipa, looked a bit more… well, ordinary?
Back in the mid 19th century, ballet was taking centre stage (literally!) and performers like Marie Taglioni started making those dreamy, weightless movements onstage. Think elegant slips and dresses rather than those big, frilly things we know and love today!
But hold onto your tiaras, my dears, because the true tutu revolution was just about to kick off! In the late 19th century, Russian ballet dancer Olga Preobrajenska started sporting something much more eye-catching - the shorter tutu we recognise today. Think "Swan Lake" and all those graceful steps, leaping and spinning across the stage! 💖
Over the years, there have been so many transformations! From those classical romantic styles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, where tulle swirled beautifully around a dancer’s ankles, to the more avant garde 20th-century styles like the 'modern tutu' and the demi-tutu which sits just a tad higher!
Today, the tutu is a statement! It embodies elegance, strength, and of course, that incredible sense of magic that every ballerina feels! It's not just about the looks, it's also about what it represents - an endless celebration of art, music, and effortless grace.
Today is a beautiful Tuesday. It's the 25th September 2012, and the world is buzzing. It's the day we can finally revel in the legacy of the tutu! Did you know there are even tutus that light up? Yes! Talk about fabulous, right? 😍
And don’t forget, you don't have to be a professional ballerina to embrace the wonder of the tutu! Just throw on your favourite pink number, head out into the sunshine, and dance! It's all about feeling empowered and confident!
