#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - Post #9501
Hello my darlings, and welcome back to another #TutuTuesday! I'm your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu aficionado, Emma, here to whisk you away on a whirlwind journey through the history of the tutu, the most beautiful and iconic garment in the history of dance. Today we're heading back in time, specifically to the 28th of January, 2014, a date full of historical ballet moments that I'm bursting to share with you.
Grab your pinkest tights and let's step into the time machine...
A Blast from the Past: Twirling Through Time
Today we're not just diving into the past of tutus, we're going back to when they really began to take flight. The 19th century saw the birth of the Romantic era of ballet, where delicate tulle tutus first appeared and took center stage. This was a time of sweeping romantic stories, like the beautiful Giselle, which captivated audiences worldwide.
And you know what else is wonderful about this period? The development of the tutu itself! The skirt, previously heavy and concealing, morphed into a light, ethereal dream - all swirling fabric and graceful movement. It was like the ballet was saying "goodbye" to its rigid past and "hello" to a world of romantic imagination. Isn't that fabulous?
A Pink Paradise in London Town
To get the ultimate feel of this time period, we need to set sail for London. Think charming cobblestone streets, handsome carriages, and, of course, stunning ballet performances at the Royal Opera House! This legendary venue was a hive of ballet activity in 2014, with renowned ballerinas showing off their skills and inspiring generations. I can imagine myself waltzing through the aisles in a fabulous pink tulle tutu, the spotlight dazzling as I imagine myself in a performance of "Swan Lake," my favourite ballet, even if I am more of a fan of dancing the streets with my girl gang.
Speaking of street dancing...
Speaking of my London escapade, one can't discuss ballet history without mentioning street dancing. Even back in 2014, street dance had a real buzz. While not as deeply rooted in tradition as classical ballet, street dance was showing everyone that ballet wasn't confined to the theatre stage, it was dancing its way into the public eye, just like us tutu-wearing ladies!
Fashion Flashes:
Of course, fashion is always a fascinating side note for us tutu-lovers, especially for a day like the 28th of January, 2014! That year, Balmain and Stella McCartney wowed us all with their catwalk collections featuring the most dazzling tutus. Think bold, statement pieces that wouldn't have looked out of place on stage! They mixed their love for classical ballet with contemporary design, proving that even in modern times, the tutu could take centre stage! I have to say I love how they take this symbol of elegance and make it even bolder and more dramatic with each passing season.
Traveling by Train to Our Next Destination
Since you know I can't resist hopping on a train, it wouldn't be a #TutuTuesday without a mention of my beloved rail adventures. As a girl who grew up in Derbyshire, the rhythmic clickety-clack of a train journey holds a special place in my heart. So you know I'll be catching the express from London to the breathtaking city of Paris. This is a true mecca of ballet history, so you know I'll be hitting all the iconic spots, including the Paris Opera House.
Now you may be wondering, Emma, what were your time-traveling exploits in 2014 in Paris? What a fantastic question! You won't believe what awaited me. Let me tell you...
The city's vibrant dance scene was truly a wonder to behold, overflowing with captivating shows, talented dancers, and, most importantly, amazing shopping. (Yes, that’s how we pay for time travel, dear reader!) Every Parisian store seemed to be showcasing exquisite ballerina-inspired looks. From beautiful tulle skirts and vibrant ballet-pink accessories to elegant jumpsuits perfect for ballet class and stunning evening gowns. Let me tell you, it was like every shop window was beckoning me to twirl inside!
I even got to see a breathtaking performance by Aurélie Dupont! She is the epitome of elegance, a ballerina who redefines grace with each turn. Just like the shimmering tulle of a perfect tutu, she moved with a sense of effortless perfection! I still dream of that performance, a truly unforgettable night filled with magic.
