#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post 9587 (22nd September, 2015)
Ahoy there, fellow tutu-lovers! It's Emma here, your pinkest ballerina, and it's #TutuTuesday, so grab your twirling skirts, darling, because today, we're whisking back in time to the dazzling world of ballet tutus!
You know me, I'm a bit of a time traveller, a passionate balletomane, and obsessed with all things sparkly and pink, naturally! So, when I landed back in my Derbyshire home this week, my brain whirred with excitement. It's the 22nd of September, 2015! The date just screams "ballerina," don't you think?
Imagine! Today, we've got a grand celebration of all things graceful and pirouette-worthy! There's the Royal Ballet taking centre stage in London, enchanting everyone with The Nutcracker. And for those seeking contemporary delights, we can hop across the pond to the New York City Ballet, mesmerised by their performance of Agon by the legendary Balanchine. A twirling treat awaits every ballet enthusiast!
But darling, let's get back to the heart of this blog: the TUTU! It's not just any skirt; it's the symbol of ballet, the essence of elegance. The history of the tutu is as grand and captivating as any ballet story.
Let's hop back in our time-machine, and whisk ourselves back to the beginning! The first true tutus, or "tutu à la romantique," were actually born in the 1830s. Back then, ballet dancers were confined by heavy costumes with pannier-esque designs, like a full skirt. This restricted their movements and didn't showcase the ballerina's delicate and graceful figures.
Then came Marie Taglioni, the pioneer of ballet fashion, who wanted something lighter and freer. Imagine, the 1830s! Women in big hoop skirts and she donned a soft, flowing, calf-length skirt made of gauzy fabric, with multiple layers.
Now, you can imagine her gracefully soaring across the stage in this light, ethereal fabric! This breakthrough marked the birth of the "romantic tutu", signifying a shift towards greater expressiveness and a newfound focus on a ballerina's movement.
Over time, the tutu evolved. Shorter lengths, layered with layers of tulle, took centre stage in the late 19th and early 20th century. The tutus became the icon we know today, perfectly showcasing a dancer's form and highlighting their jumps and pirouettes with their billowing grandeur!
I often wonder if those iconic ballerinas like Anna Pavlova ever imagined the evolution of their cherished tutu? From that first romantic design, the tutu journeyed through several stages: the "Classical Tutu", with its multi-layered form, the "Bell Tutu", offering a fuller look with tiers of tulle, the "Pancake Tutu", flat and emphasizing lines, and the "Demi-Tutu", featuring shorter lengths and a more modern style.
But there's more! The tutu journey doesn't just involve the ballet stage. It's found its way into everyday lives! You know my motto: "Embrace the tutu life"! I think every single one of you needs to twirl your way through life with a little bit of ballet.
Don't be scared to embrace the tutus. We're celebrating this magnificent fashion staple. You've got to own a tutu, whether you’re on stage or rocking it on the high street, just like I do!
I know what you're thinking! Where can you find a gorgeous pink tutu?
I’ve got a few ideas! If you're feeling inspired by the ballerinas from this #TutuTuesday trip back to the past, the perfect vintage tutus can be found in quaint antique shops. Oh, and don't forget to scour the online boutiques!
My dear fashionistas, even with all this talk about the past, there's a vibrant future for the tutu. Even today, the tutu's shape, style, and symbolism continue to evolve.
And with its boundless energy, the tutu continues to be embraced by fashion icons worldwide! A true fashion masterpiece, right? From Balenciaga’s elegant take on a tutu-inspired dress to Moschino’s iconic pink tutus, the tutu’s presence in haute couture is undeniable.
So, for my dearest tutu lovers, let's take a twirling dive into the modern world! How can we integrate our favourite accessory into everyday lives?
