#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - Post 9662 - February 28th 2017

Oh my darling tutufarians! It's a glorious #TutuTuesday again and this week I’m hopping off my trusty train carriage (which always arrives at the right station by sheer force of fabulous tutu power!) to whisk you away on a journey through history…of tutus, of course! I'm talking historical time travel.

Firstly, a huge, sparkly shout-out to everyone who donned their pink tutus in support of my #PinkTutuRevolution. My DMs are bursting with pictures of you fabulous, fierce tutu-clad souls! The movement is growing, the world is getting a bit pinker, and I for one am utterly thrilled.

Now, onto the fascinating history of tutus, and, my dears, I must tell you, it's far more intricate and glamorous than you might think! The very first tutus were nothing like the grand and beautiful masterpieces we adore today. Back in the 17th century, dancers would simply wear long skirts that would sometimes be slightly gathered at the ankles. Quite uninspiring, isn’t it?

Then, in the 18th century, the shape began to shift! Dancers began wearing loose skirts that were almost tunic-like. Imagine a very wide-skirted shirt, gathered at the waist - still far removed from the elegant lines we adore today, but a distinct evolution in the shape of ballet wear.

This brings us to the real start of the tutu story – the 19th century. The iconic ballerina, Marie Taglioni, stepped onto the scene, she was practically an embodiment of a wispy breeze with a new look - short and flouncy. The design of her “tutu” – a shorter skirt gathered at the waist – revolutionized the world of ballet fashion.

And you know what? It was wildly unpopular at the time! I can just imagine the scandal! The critics of the day (can you believe the nerve!) declared that it was shocking and immoral to expose so much leg, but what could be more breathtaking than the grace and skill of a ballerina as she dances on stage? Marie’s innovative new look opened the door to what we consider to be the “classical tutu.”

And guess what else happened? It sparked a whirlwind of creative energy in the world of ballet wear. It wasn't long until other creative spirits jumped aboard the tutu train, developing the different styles we cherish today, The ‘Romantic’ and ‘Classical’ tutus came into existence, each possessing an entirely different charm. The ‘Romantic’ tutu, favoured by Romantic era ballet stars like Carlotta Grisi and Fanny Cerrito, boasted multiple layers of tulle for a dreamily ethereal look. These ballerinas twirled, glided and spun like delicate flowers floating on a gentle breeze, bringing grace and enchantment to the stage.

The 'Classical' tutu, that mainstay of most of the ballet world, emerged in the 19th century to celebrate the power and artistry of ballet. It's instantly recognizable with it's iconic tight-fitting bodice and flowing layers of tulle, sculpted and layered to allow dancers to move with such freedom and poise.

And, just to spice things up, a new style arrived – the ‘Pagan’ tutu - perfect for a captivating Spanish flamenco-style performance or for portraying mischievous fairy tales! Its fitted skirt, typically extending just to the knees, allows for vibrant movements. And of course, there are tons of different variations within the “Classical” tutu style – such as the “waisted” tutu, that looks amazing and provides much more freedom of movement than the earlier “Classical” style tutu, perfect for jumps and powerful leg work.

Speaking of variations! From ‘Whimsical’ tutus perfect for whimsical fairy stories, “Folk” tutus inspired by traditional cultures around the globe, and "Character" tutus, which perfectly encapsulate a specific character, with exquisite embroidery, detail and design! These are only some of the incredible forms we have to marvel at!

From the whimsical ‘Romantic’ to the fierce ‘Classical’, there’s a tutu style to match every type of dance, and every personality! Every single day, my darling tutu lovers, the magic of tutus continues to blossom, transform, evolve, and inspire! Isn't that truly incredible?!

So, this #TutuTuesday, what kind of tutu story is your life writing?

Do you dream of swirling in a romantic tutu like a petal on the breeze? Or commanding attention in a powerful ‘Classical’ creation? Perhaps your heart is drawn to the drama and flare of the ‘Pagan’ tutu?

Tell me about it! Tell me everything in the comments below.

Now, darling, as my time in this decade is nearly at an end and I must get my train ride planned, so I can catch up with some fascinating future ballerinas, I shall bid you adieu until next #TutuTuesday.

Oh, and for a special treat this week, a “Tutu- Tuesday- Surprise.” On my blog today, I'm sharing all about the ballet shows I'm looking forward to this season!
