Tutu Tuesday: A Whirlwind History of the Tutu! 🩰💕

#9789

Hello lovelies! It’s Emma here, your resident tutu-wearing time traveller, back for another #TutuTuesday. This week, we’re taking a trip through time to delve into the captivating history of the tutu – the epitome of feminine grace and theatrical elegance. Buckle up, darling, because this one’s a real whirlwind! 🌪️

A Time Traveller's Tale

Oh, wouldn’t it be simply divine to stroll the cobblestone streets of Paris in the late 18th century, swirling my tulle skirt, as the first ballerinas twirled across the stage in their revolutionary outfits?

It’s incredible to think that this iconic garment was once just a simple, practical undergarment for the fashionable ladies of the day. And just imagine, dear readers, back then the tutu was just one of the layers and layers they would wear for warmth. I shudder to think how warm and heavy those clothes must have been!

But like all fashion, times have changed and the simple, layered undergarment took a stage of its own. As the 19th century dawned, dancers started shedding the cumbersome skirts in favour of shorter, lighter skirts for freedom of movement. These skirts gave them the ability to execute more graceful, elegant moves, and suddenly, the ballet world was transformed. A little bit of leg here, a bit of plié there, a flick of the skirt, and presto - we’re in for a beautiful, whimsical ballet performance! Imagine the gasp from the audience as they got a peek at those beautiful ballet legs! It must have been absolutely glorious! It’s no wonder the popularity of ballet took off so quickly!

From Romanticism to the Rise of the Romantic Tutu

Fast forward to the Romanticism movement, and our beloved tutu starts to really come into its own! This era of art and culture emphasized a delicate and graceful femininity, and the ballerina was the embodiment of this aesthetic. With soft, billowing tulle, the Romantic Tutu flowed beautifully and dramatically across the stage, echoing the lightness and ethereal qualities of the dancers themselves. Think graceful Swan Lake! Those beautiful tutus with layers of gossamer fabric. It’s absolutely dreamy! And, darling, with the rise of the ballerina’s legs in the spotlight, what would these romantic shows be without a tutu?!

Fashionable Flair, Darling!

But, darlings, our tutus are more than just lovely little dance-wear! Did you know, back in the 1800s, fashionistas would adopt the Romantic tutu’s soft elegance into their own everyday wardrobes! And darling, I find that truly enchanting! The romantic tutu didn’t just create an ethereal world on the stage, it influenced fashion everywhere. You couldn’t walk down the street without seeing a lovely young woman swishing her soft, flowy skirts! They truly captured the heart of everyone and we’ve still got that whimsical influence in our fashions today!

Onward to the 20th Century

Of course, as we step into the 20th century, tutus went through a fabulous transformation, my darlings! We can thank some incredible innovators for that. The era of experimentation and innovation gave us the beautiful ‘Tutu à la Russe,’ which is all about structured layers. A little bit stricter but still as charming as can be! This tutu wasn’t as flowing or romantic as its earlier versions, but it gave ballerinas the freedom to take the world by storm with its intricate movements. Think "Giselle." And did you know, my darling, that Marie Taglioni - an icon in the dance world - helped inspire the introduction of the "Tutu à la Russe."

A New Era of Expression: The Contemporary Tutu

Oh, darlings! You can’t forget about our Contemporary tutus. These fabulous new forms are a bit more about expressive, personal freedom rather than traditional structures, just like the world around us. Some tutus are full of fabric, and some are shorter, lighter, and some even explore unusual materials and unconventional forms. So innovative! There are no limits! There are some dazzling, stunning contemporary ballet performances in the world and it is incredible to see the range of amazing tutus that are designed and worn in these shows!

Pink, Please! 💕

Oh darling, did I tell you about my favourite colour? Pink, of course! Did you know, back in the Victorian era, Pink was associated with a dainty feminine sensibility and charm? And guess what, lovelies, the Tutu fits perfectly with that! The tutu just loves a splash of Pink! A ballet dancer on a pink tutu makes the perfect image. Think of "La Bayadere."
