#TutuTuesday: A Whirlwind Through Ballet Tutu History (Post 9951)

Hello, my fellow tutu-lovers! It's Emma here, back from another time-traveling adventure and bursting with stories about the delightful evolution of the ballet tutu.

Today's #TutuTuesday post takes us on a trip to a most enchanting place – Paris, of course! There's no place more vibrant with the magic of ballet, and on this particularly lovely 13th of September in 2022, I had the chance to witness some exquisite performances.

As a true tutu devotee, my journey through time always involves a good deal of research. It’s fascinating to see how the tutu, a symbol of grace and beauty, has been transformed throughout the years. So, settle in, grab a cup of tea (Earl Grey, naturally) and let’s embark on a whirlwind tour of tutu history!

From Humble Beginnings to Romantic Flounces

The very first tutus weren't the fluffy, glamorous garments we see today. They were more practical than elegant, really just simple skirts designed to allow dancers freedom of movement. Think about it - imagine dancing in a long, billowing gown! You wouldn't be able to kick, leap or twirl with the same grace, now would you?

In the early 1800s, as ballet began to evolve, the tutu became more sophisticated. It wasn’t long before tutus made a bold fashion statement. We can thank the "Romantic Period" for introducing the famous Romantic tutu, featuring a wide, layered skirt with a flurry of fabric flowing down. Just imagine, my dears, these fluffy wonders swirling like clouds as the dancers pirouetted across the stage! Pure enchantment.

The Emergence of the Tulle Powerhouse

Then came the late 19th century and the revolutionary introduction of tulle. Imagine, light and airy material like gossamer woven into an almost ethereal layer of beauty! The classic "tutu de ballet" (meaning, “tutu of ballet,” you see?) emerged as we know it. Short, full of volume and constructed in multiple layers of tulle – a dancer's dream, honestly! This is the tutu that holds its place in ballet today, the epitome of grace, lightness and femininity.

Twirling into the 20th Century: Innovation & Creativity

Throughout the 20th century, tutu styles were explored and expanded like never before! From the elegant, symmetrical forms of the early 1900s, the world of ballet saw an explosion of creativity. Tutus started appearing in diverse fabrics, cuts, and colours - the designers got really experimental.

For instance, we have the iconic, bell-shaped tutu. This version, oh-so-beautiful, takes its shape from a delicate bodice and an alluring, flowing bell skirt. Imagine that on a prima ballerina, it’s absolutely mesmerizing. And, who can forget the tutus created by fashion houses, like Dior, that revolutionised the way we looked at ballet costume. It’s simply mind-boggling how stylish ballet has become!

From Traditional to Contemporary – Exploring New Directions

Now, you might be surprised to learn that tutus have even taken a modern turn! Some choreographers have created groundbreaking works, pushing the boundaries of the tutu by creating revolutionary styles and forms.

One of the most fascinating evolutions is the "contemporary tutu." It has become its own breed, featuring asymmetrical styles and a softer, flowy silhouette that contrasts beautifully with the more structured styles of the past. Imagine, sleek lines meeting billowing layers, resulting in a modern, expressive tutu!

Tutus and Me: My Personal Obsession

To be honest, my friends in Derbyshire might tell you I’ve been obsessed with tutus since I was a tiny tot, pirouetting around the living room with my grandmum’s discarded petticoats.

I firmly believe everyone deserves a pink tutu. This enchanting garment has the power to inspire a little magic and creativity in each one of us. A pink tutu can make a rainy day brighter, a journey more fun and your outfit oh-so-much more elegant!

My quest? To inspire everyone to wear a pink tutu, to embrace the joy and freedom it embodies. It's a call to action, a call to dance and twirl! Imagine a world where pink tutus become a universal symbol of happiness, grace, and artistry. Wouldn't that be a glorious sight?

Tutu Inspiration for This #TutuTuesday

As you can see, the ballet tutu is far from a mere garment – it’s a vessel for artistic expression, a reminder of joy and grace.

In this 2022 time capsule, I’ve stumbled upon a rather special collection, the "The Story of the Tutu” Exhibition at the Paris Opera Ballet. There are iconic, traditional tutus in shimmering white, whimsical contemporary tutus with edgy lines and delicate, ethereal tulle designs - there is truly something for everyone! It was incredible.

And, after the ballet, a visit to Paris, of course, means fashion! A quick hop down Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore led me to some delightful vintage shops bursting with layers of gorgeous, fluffy tulle. Now that was an inspiring afternoon!
