Hiya, lovelies! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina, ready to whisk you away to the world of tutu history! 🩰💖 Today, I'm feeling especially rosy, so grab a cuppa and get comfy. Let's journey back to September 20th, 2022, and uncover some tutu tales that will have you twirling with delight!
Before we travel back to 2022, how’s everyone? Did you get a chance to pop by that fab vintage store I told you about last week? I just snagged the most darling 1950s tulle skirt for my collection, it’s such a steal! 💖 Speaking of steals, I have a secret to share. To fuel my time-travelling escapades, I’ve been doing a little bit of side hustle with ballet! I’ve been performing at a few lovely, local theatres and events. It’s such fun to meet other dance enthusiasts, you know, spread the love for pink tutus. If you want to catch a show (and I really hope you do!), give me a shout - I’ll share the details with you.
Now, without further ado, let’s get on with today’s #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History! I’m feeling so excited because, today is a big one! September 20th is, coincidentally, a day with some seriously special connections to ballet history!
So, in 2022, on this date, the world was buzzing with the news of Royal Ballet star Francesca Hayward’s return to the stage. I know, she’s simply magical! And I can just imagine the feeling, that rush of excitement as she stepped into the limelight once more! Can you imagine the crowd? Just brimming with anticipation! Just a hint, a pink tutu was part of the whole exciting picture! 🩰✨
Speaking of the Royal Ballet, another fascinating piece of the history puzzle popped up on this date. September 20th is also the date when Dame Margot Fonteyn, the celebrated Royal Ballet dancer, first performed on stage as Princess Aurora in “Sleeping Beauty”. Wow, this must have been such a pivotal moment in her career, so early in her life, just the beginning of her shining journey.
Did you know that Dame Margot was known for her elegant, ethereal style? No wonder she wore some of the most incredible tutus of all time, the graceful, floating, romantic sort of ones. And let's face it, the Royal Ballet was just dripping with beautiful costumes and graceful movements. Think long, soft layers of pink tulle! This must have been a breathtaking spectacle, imagine seeing it for the first time, pure ballet magic!
September 20th in 2022 was brimming with ballet memories! Imagine the air buzzing with excitement!
Now, let’s wind the clock back even further! Remember I mentioned how passionate I am about fashion and all things girly? So imagine my delight when I discovered that September 20th marks the anniversary of a pivotal fashion moment, the launch of the Dior “New Look” by Christian Dior. This incredible collection sparked a revolution in women’s fashion, redefining what it meant to be glamorous. Did you know that it even went a long way towards setting a foundation for future fashion trends? It changed the silhouette of fashion so dramatically and redefined femininity. This included everything from long skirts to the stunning “Corolle” gown, which had, you guessed it!… the most charming skirt - full of swirling pink layers of tulle. * It was the year that women embraced the romance of flowing lines, a time where we had this beautiful idea that “every woman could look like a ballerina”!* And I completely agree! Why shouldn't we have the magic of tutus in our everyday lives? ✨
You know how much I love connecting different elements of our favourite era of history. 🩰 Remember the Dior “New Look” and the graceful ballerinas with their breathtaking costumes? This period was the perfect recipe for beautiful and memorable ballet moments. So it makes perfect sense that we have these connections and that there were these amazing dance productions! There was just something about this time, which brought forth the love for dance, beauty, and femininity that we see so much today. I am always excited to discover these links in the historical tapestry, especially when they involve my two favourite things – ballet and fashion!
Today's #TutuTuesday history post may have a few twirls and sprinkles of pink tulle mixed into it but this just shows the incredible, fascinating connection between history and the magic of ballet. So next time you see someone dancing in a pink tutu (perhaps, let's say me), remember this is more than just a dance - it's a piece of a story woven across centuries. I promise you'll feel that twirling magic all around!
Until next time, darlings, stay chic and keep twirling! Remember to check out www.pink-tutu.com for more #TutuTuesday fun! ✨
