Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com for another fabulous Tutu Tuesday! This week I’m back from a trip across the pond and just overflowing with ideas for my latest pink tutu creations, inspired by the amazing ballet history I’ve been soaking up.
Oh my, it’s been such a busy few weeks, all thanks to a grand performance in New York City! Not just any performance, but a full-blown rendition of Giselle! You know, the ballet where Giselle goes completely bonkers over a hunky peasant and, well, the story gets a little dark, but the costumes? Absolutely fabulous! Especially the wispy tutus that the Wilis wear! So dramatic, so ghostly. Just chef’s kiss The tutu, in its full form, was truly born in the Romanticism era, just as the story of Giselle unfolded. You have to love those puffed-out layers of tulle that billow so magnificently. Imagine how much time those costume makers had to spend back then, hand-stitching every little piece! It makes my modern sewing machine seem like a bit of a lazybones!
Oh, and did I mention the fabulous stage they used for Giselle? It was a marvel, full of sparks, smoky lighting, and enough depth to make your head spin. But I also love the simple beauty of classical tutus – imagine a single layer of netting billowing gently as a ballerina gracefully spins on the stage. That, my darlings, is perfection. It doesn't get more elegant or more visually impactful!
Speaking of elegant and impactful, what an incredible weekend it was! This Sunday, we enjoyed the annual NYC Ballet Festival! Just incredible! And the best part? I got to see the incredible dancers from all over the world dressed in their dazzling tutus. Oh my, there were so many different styles, from the classic white, to some stunning hot pink ones! I even spied a bright yellow creation! Absolutely mesmerising! That evening, I popped into the most exquisite vintage boutique, right in the heart of Manhattan. Oh my! So much beautiful fashion history there! I found myself whisked back to the early 1900s, where shorter tutus, a bit shorter than their traditional length, were a thing! It’s always amazing to see how the history of fashion affects dance. We saw it again during my whirlwind trip, and saw tutus become shorter and more dramatic during the time of World War 2, to signify a certain level of sprightliness and even war-like energy. They didn’t even need a big fluffy puff in this period! Can you believe that?!
It just shows, you see, that even tutus aren't immune to changing trends! Now back to my recent New York shopping adventure. I simply had to snag a few bits and bobs. This amazing vintage jacket made of shimmering turquoise fabric would look positively magnificent with my Pink-Tutu.com new tutu collection! But enough about my wardrobe woes! Back to our favourite subject: tutus! The 1950s and 1960s really saw the evolution of the tutu reach a peak, darling. Remember Rudolf Nureyev? Now, there was a performer who knew how to rock a tutu. This revolutionary man was like a rockstar on stage! And we must also say a huge thanks to the ballet greats like Margot Fonteyn for their role in pushing the tutu’s limits, both aesthetically and with their graceful and dramatic moves!
So what are some of the key tutu trends that I've spotted lately, you ask? Here's the lowdown:
- Black is the new pink: That’s right, folks! It’s becoming very fashionable. Ballet troupes are becoming bolder and more innovative with their stagewear, and incorporating dark colours is one of the most noticeable recent trends. I do think it adds a dramatic, almost mysterious air. And of course, a black tutu looks incredibly chic.
- Mix and match madness: From my recent trips and observations, the way tutu-makers combine different colours and textures now is very dynamic and exciting. One of the latest trends that I love, darling, is when the tutu includes a mixture of black tulle and sequins - Oh, the visual effect of this one is truly dramatic, like little sparkling gems swirling around a dancer’s limbs! It's just so gorgeous, you can’t take your eyes off it!
- Let’s get physical: Designers these days seem to love combining different textiles! And I love it. There’s velvet, there’s cotton, lace, satin - I’m finding so much inspiration. I saw one tutu design where the skirt was almost totally made out of satin ribbons tied in knots - just imagine the movement that creates on stage! Absolutely breathtaking!
