I've just landed back in my Derbyshire cottage, my suitcases stuffed with vintage fashion finds and the echoes of a stunning ballet performance still ringing in my ears. This week, we're diving into the fascinating world of the tutu, exploring its glorious history, from its humble beginnings to its dazzling evolution into the iconic garment we know and love today!
Let's take a trip to Paris, circa 1832: Picture this – a whirlwind of swirling silk and a burst of movement on the grand stage. This was the year Marie Taglioni, the undisputed Queen of Romanticism, stepped onto the Parisian stage wearing something quite extraordinary. Forget the heavy, floor-length gowns of the era – Taglioni wore a daringly short, white tulle skirt, a vision of lightness and elegance that revolutionised ballet costume and, quite frankly, the world of fashion!
This was the very first "tutu", as we now call it, a garment named for the swirling, almost turbulent way it moved. Taglioni's creation ignited a love affair between ballet and fashion, paving the way for the stunning tutus we see today.
But let's rewind a little... While Marie Taglioni’s tutus stole the spotlight in the mid-1800s, the concept of lightweight skirts in dance goes way back to the 17th century! Imagine ladies twirling in elaborate layers of taffeta and gauze – pretty impressive, but nowhere near as dynamic as those groundbreaking, ankle-grazing, revolutionary tutus!

Here in 2026, it's an era of creative reinvention for the tutu! We're seeing modern reinterpretations, where designers use the tutu as a canvas to explore new forms and materials, blending tradition with avant-garde design. It's truly a magical time for tutu-lovers, and I, for one, am utterly captivated!
What's my personal favourite part about tutu history? Oh, it’s the versatility! Whether we're talking about the delicate beauty of the Romantic Tutu, the captivating drama of the Classical Tutu, or the audacious freedom of modern tutu variations, it's clear that the tutu, throughout its history, has been a statement piece, a powerful symbol of creativity and feminine strength.
Did you know that October 20th is International Ballet Day? Oh, how fitting that this week I had the privilege of experiencing a performance by the renowned Paris Opera Ballet! They transported me to a world of pure enchantment. There were swirling tutus, intricate choreography, and an abundance of talent that made me wish I could hop back into the time machine and dance alongside them!
As a time traveler, I love the excitement of discovering the diverse tutu styles that have captured hearts across continents! And that brings us to this week’s exciting trip – it's no secret that ballet reigns supreme in Russia, and this trip had me waltzing through the halls of the Mariinsky Theatre, feeling the historical whispers of Diaghilev’s Ballet Russe. Just picture it - stunning designs, sumptuous colours, and the exquisite detail of some of the most legendary tutus in history, worn by world-renowned dancers like Anna Pavlova!
Fashion and shopping are in my DNA, darlings! This week’s journey included a delightful spree in the vibrant world of Parisian couture houses. And, of course, no visit to the world of ballet would be complete without a trip to one of the finest tutu makers in the world! I snagged the most delightful vintage creations - a classic Romantic Tutu, and an oh-so-daring, black, feathered beauty - imagine!
Here in my Derbyshire cottage, surrounded by vintage fashion finds and memories of graceful twirls, I feel like a true princess! The tutus are more than just clothes; they're a symbol of joy, elegance, and limitless dreams. And my aim? To spread the magic of the tutu far and wide, and encourage everyone to embrace the power of twirling and the delight of wearing a pink tutu at least once in their lives.
