Hey lovely tutu-lovers! ??
It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing, time-travelling ballerina, Emma, here, back with another #TutuTuesday blog post from the heart of ... well, London actually! It's November the 24th, 2026 and guess what? It's the opening night of the brand new production of "Swan Lake" at the Royal Opera House! ?✨
You know, just a casual Tuesday night in the life of your humble ballerina blogger. ?
Speaking of life (and tutus), let's get down to business - because you know I love a good dose of tutu history!
Today we're talking all about the origins of the ballet tutu! It's like… the quintessential symbol of ballet, isn’t it? The frills, the fabric, the shape... It just screams "dancing, dancing, dancing!"
But where did this iconic piece of ballet clothing actually come from?
Well, as always, we've got to go back to the early days - the Romantic period, 1800s. The world was completely obsessed with love and beauty (which I still can't complain about!), and those beautiful ideals permeated into dance. Ballerinas were meant to be like mythical creatures, ethereal, light as a feather, all graceful and flitting about the stage!
You'll never guess who helped the ballerina's freedom of movement to finally take flight?!
Marie Taglioni, my personal ballet icon! ? She was an incredible dancer, truly ahead of her time. Now, let's not forget, this was a time where corsets and stiff, long dresses were the fashion norms. Marie changed things.
Here comes the big moment – she wore a short, revolutionary skirt for her dance, “La Sylphide”, and bam... the first ballet tutu as we know it was born! A lightweight, breezy little number, it allowed ballerinas to move with elegance and freedom.
Can you imagine wearing a huge dress onstage? Not very pirouette-friendly, I tell ya!
So there you have it, the ballet tutu story! ✨ The evolution of the tutu, as with all things fashion, continued through the decades. From the bell-shaped, frilly tutu to the longer and fuller “Romantic tutu” of the late 1800s, then came the s hapes a r k e* of tut us!
Think “The Sleeping Beauty”, “Swan Lake” - they all have different tutus based on their era and the type of performance! But they all contribute to the beautiful, magical stories the ballerinas bring to life on stage.
And speaking of "Swan Lake", I'm off to the Royal Opera House to see this exciting new production. ?
You just know it’s going to be full of pink and fluffy, perfect for inspiring my next Tutu Tuesday blog post. ? Plus, the perfect excuse to indulge in some extra luxurious pre-show shopping. I just had to pick up a new silk top for my latest tutu ensemble.
The best part? I’m travelling there by train. I mean, who can say no to an amazing view of the countryside AND a lovely cuppa while heading to the city? ?
Speaking of time travelling by train... ? It's thanks to the wonderful and magical world of dance (and the incredible audiences!) that my time travels continue! Every performance helps me get a little closer to achieving my goal... getting everyone to wear a pink tutu, just like me. ?
